Some are claiming it’s a supply chain issue. Some are claiming it’s too much money to repurpose. Others say they don’t want to sell at reduced profit..
All I know is there are tons of hungry people right now and that is unacceptable.

Open the farms to the public and let people take it or pay what they can.. literally anything is better then just destroying it

Agreed. Especially if that food production is distributed regionally. They are having a negative impact on not just their local communities but the surrounding states.

It’s both their fault. The farmers can still make a profit by making deals with the public or the even the essential chain stores. At least let that product get a chance going to households and organizations that feed kids etc.Yes that's right, blame the farmers for something that is entirely the government's fault. Essential workers can still distribute. Farmers and distribution can and do fall under essential and emergency travel. I’m sure they can afford to broker a deal with the stores and public nearbyAdn how are they exactly supposed to get the food to the people if they are in lockdown?
There is a restaurant in my town that all the local farms have been donating surplus to, as well as monetary donations from local businesses and citizens.
Every single day they cook up between 500-1000 meals to feed the people struggling in our community. Every single day since this started.
For perspective there are only 800 households in my town. (Population 1700)

Farming isn't a charity, they are not obligated to give away their food. And they are dumping because of distribution problems, not because of greed:

We’re all losing money here with the shutdowns thanks to the government. I lost faith when congress was having their spats with each other over the stimulus bill while many american citizens were feeling the financial hardships.

How locked down is everyone? Or maybe, how locked does everyone feel?
In Canada, at least where I am, not much has changed, except restaurants are closed, and sanitized social distancing is pervasive. The parks are closed, but people are out and about. There is no legally enforceable lockdown, and everyone seems to be enjoying the nice weather we’re having. Home Depots are open, and a lot of people are doing work on their homes and yards. You can hear power tools and lawnmowers all over my neighborhood.
But I’m hearing about fines in the US, and cops hauling people off for not wearing a mask, etc. Nobody can do any painting or home repairs because hardware stores are closed and Home Depot can’t sell anything useful. Is that the standard for everyone in the US at the moment?
I hear it’s pretty strict in the UK as well. How do you all feel about your situation right now?

I get it from a business perspective now. Because they lose income with the restaurant and school sectors that they hold business with who probably fulfill those bulk orders.
You lose a third of business. Shipping out gets pricey. It would be nice to see them do some sales with the local communities at least. Or yeah even charitable donations.
Plenty of blame to go around.
It’s not so bad here. Can still buy whatever we want at Home Depot or Walmart even though all the small stores are closed, which sucks. We are going to try building raised garden beds next week.. seeds seem scarce though so not sure what’s the point but it will keep us busy.
I went to the store to pick up a couple things today - without a mask. No one said anything.
I never said ship it out. But there’s things that can be done to save atleast some of the produce by giving it to people rather then plowing it under. Or destroying it.
The government should be purchasing it and using the guard to transport and distribute it if that’s what’s needed. It should not be getting destroyed. The price of eggs has doubled for chrissakes.

I agreed up until a couple days ago, but I think we’re past it now. I think people are going to get sick, and they will die from coronavirus, or they will not, and we’re not going to affect it by staying home. People are more aware now about germs and sanitizing properly, and that will stop the infection from overwhelming society. It’s time to resume our lives. Most of us have already been exposed to it.
