sorry to break it to you, they were savages. to each other. far before the latest euros arrived in north america*, the american indians were warring with one another and performing torture on other tribespeople. whites might have shot at indians, but indians slow roasted their enemies over a fire. their treatment of women was also abysmal, but youll never hear about that unless you read first hand accounts from that era (which i have). (its the same hypocricy with that as it is with feminist SJWs railing in the west while theyres nary a word said about the conditions and restrictions of women under sharia law.)Colonizing a country by murdering the native people and stealing their land shouldn't be described as "taming". The Europeans who came to America saw the Native Americans as savages that had to be tamed. It's not really an aspect of American history that we should be proud of or glorify.
the land was taken from them. everyone can agree with that, and its not one of americas bright spots. however, the pioneering spirit into the formidable west is very american and something to be proud of in history (if this is what trump was alluding to, i am in agreement). keep in mind that until about 1840 or so, almost all americans believed it was pure desert with nothing to see.
by the way, early western fur traders from 1810 to about 1835+/- got along VERY well with the indians. it wasnt until religion was forced upon them and the hoardes came through that the fighting began.
*romans, egyptians, and others (vikings, etc.) all visited north america far earlier. if we want to get technical, native americans really were not native to north america. they just happen to be here prior to the latest european peoples arrival.
