all of these calls were made from the ground.
The passengers were clearly reading from a script.They were told who to call and what to say.
The plane was not being highjacked.
They thought they were doing an enactment.

i think they did not. and youre right-- the cell phones could not work in the air. since the planes are travelling at about 3, 400 mph, the cell phones, IF they could have a strong enough signal in 2001 (i think only one japanese manufacturer was capable of coming close to it) would jump within a few seconds from tower to tower and would lose connections before the calls could be put through.
