It belongs to britain, and is funded by britain, as far as I am aware.

The TV police come round to peoples houses and force them to pay the TV tax.

Which is kind of hilarious, but true.
It’s a public broadcaster, like the CBC in Canada.

The figures coming in are a bit worrying.
This site seems to get the confirmed total first.

If those are the true figures it’s reLly not that concerning.. that’s about a 2% fatality rate, the original estimates were at 3% which compared to other epidemics was pretty low to begin with

The worrying thing is how its increasing.
Sort of exponential. 1000 more sick yesterdays update, 2000 more today.

Those are the official figures. It is possible that they are under reporting.

Very likely they are underreporting. And listing inaccurate causes of death. I’m just trying not to entirely freak myself out. My kids both just had the flu. My client had the flu. Half the school I work in has the flu. That’s bad enough. Can’t deal with more than that.

No, please don't freak yourself out!
I'm sure they will manage to contain and cure it.

I wonder if the current Coronavirus will kill more people than the recent panics in Zika Virus, SARS, Swine Flu and the Y2K Millenium Bug.

tbh, I love a bit of doom porn, but I don't think this will take hold outside china.

I think other countries have been warned in time and will catch enough infected to stop it spreading unchecked.

I just spoke with a man in Hong Kong. He said that's it's basically like the flu, affecting mostly the young, old and ill-immuned. But they are charging $25 usd for a box of face masks and people are terrified, lined up around the block to buy them. Because of their past with SARS, they are scared. Anyone caught trying to cross the border are rounded up and put in fever camps left over from the SARS outbreak.

*Hong Kong is not under quarantine (but they are snatching people who try to cross the boarder) and he says only 8 people have it so far. He says whatever China is reporting, times it by 10 to get an idea of true numbers.

This is good. The guy who’s in charge of the response to the outbreak in Shanghai gave an update recently.

My favourite part is the announcement that all the doctors who have been on the front lines will be relieved and replaced with doctors who are members of the Communist Party. As he said, in effect, “Party members are sworn to put the public welfare first, so now’s their chance to honour that oath.” I guess another way of looking at it would be that ideologically pure doctors will now be on the front lines and able to manage the story, but I somehow don’t think that’s the reason.

Coronavirus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization, as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.

"The main reason is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, making the announcement at a press conference in Geneva.

The concern is that it could spread to countries with weaker health systems.
