In that day the Lord will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
With His fierce and great and mighty sword,
Even Leviathan the twisted serpent;
And He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea. ( Isaiah 27:1)
Isaiah’s Apocalypse ends in the destruction of Leviathan, the coiled or twisting Serpent.The LORD himself will slay Him with the “great and mighty Sword”.
Who is Leviathan? In this passage we are told He lives in the Sea, and that He is a coiled, or undulating Serpent. In that description we hear an echo of the beast in Revelation 13.
And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore.Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. ( Revelation 13:1)
Interestingly, Leviathan is mentioned five times in the Bible.
Yet God is my king from of old,
Who works deeds of deliverance in the midst of the earth.
You divided the sea by Your strength;
You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters.
You crushed the heads of Leviathan;( Psalm 74:14)
In this Psalm, which commemorates the mighty works of God in the past, The Psalmist celebrates the breaking of the heads of Leviathan, after he recounted the Dividing of the Sea by the power of God. Leviathan is obviously a reference to Egypt, the SuperPower at that time in history. Only God can divide the seas, and Only God can crush Leviathan.
Leviathan is first mention in the third chapter of Job. That chapter is perhaps the darkest study of human grieving and sorrow in all of scripture. It is so dark, one could almost say it is near Nihilistic. Job is extensively cursing the very day he was born;
And Job spake, and said,
Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived. Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it. Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months. Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein. Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.
Leviathan is the actual word translated “Mourning” in vs 7. Those who are ready to “raise their Leviathan”. How fitting as you will see, that the Bible says Leviathan is raised up as a response to nihilism, and a despondent, godless mood in humanity. Where there is no faith in God, there is only faith in the State.

Job also mentions Leviathan, in fact, He does so in some depth.
Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook?
Or press down his tongue with a cord?
Can you put a rope in his nose
Or pierce his jaw with a hook?
Will he make many supplications to you,
Or will he speak to you soft words?
“Will he make a covenant with you?
Will you take him for a servant forever?
“Will you play with him as with a bird,
Or will you bind him for your maidens?
“Will the traders bargain over him?
Will they divide him among the merchants?
“Can you fill his skin with harpoons,
Or his head with fishing spears?
“Lay your hand on him;
Remember the battle; you will not do it again!
“Behold, your expectation is false;
Will you be laid low even at the sight of him?
“No one is so fierce that he dares to arouse him;
Who then is he that can stand before Me?
“Who has given to Me that I should repay him?
Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine.( Job 41:1-10)
This is the part of the book of Job, where God asks Job a series of questions, designed to show him how utterly disqualified He is to ever call any of God’s ways into question! The questions asked of Job, cover the whole gamut of science, as the Creator asks Job if He knows the paths in the Sea, and could he make his voice travel on Light (electricity), or does He know where the Storehouse of Snow is? Job can only sit there dumbfounded.
Then the LORD brings up Leviathan. Whatever Leviathan is, he is huge, wild, fierce and untameable . The mere sight of him is terrifying, and by the description, it seems as though God was describing some kind of a Dinosaur. Job knew what the beast was, and understood how utterly over his head these questions asked of him were.
Can you fish Him out of the waters with a hook ? Could you ring his nose and put a rope through it to lead him around? Would you put him on a leash and let your daughters play with him? Job if you so much as touch him, to do him harm, you will never forget it! But the implied response of the LORD is, “I can”. God alone can deal with Leviathan, whoever he is.
Could there be a parallel meaning to the term Leviathan?
I do not believe Jesus Christ is coming back to fight a literal reptile which is oppressing Israel. Does Job 41 have anything to say to us today?
I think so. I believe that when you combine the passage in Job, Isaiah , and the Psalms, with the book of Revelation 13, the meaning of Leviathan is plain to see.
Egypt was a Leviathan, that oppressed God’s people, and there was no one on earth who could have broken her heads, only God could do so. Rome and Babylon in turn were also Leviathans, as was the Assyrian Empire Isaiah warned Judah about.
A Leviathan is a superstate. The final superstate is forming before our very eyes, and is fierce, heartless, musclebound, and has technology which is almost “godlike” in human estimation. Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war on it?
The Superstate seems to know everything. It can “listen”to every phone conversation in the world, through its use of Algorithyms, it can zero in on any person or subject of Interest. Through technology privacy is a thing of the past.
The Beast rises from the sea, for in the Bible, the sea is a metaphor for the restless, turbulent humanity which is defiant of the only true God. “
The wicked are like the raging of the Sea… there is no peace saith my God, for the wicked” .
The beast has layer after layer of Armor, no human being can stop it, or even touch it.I have heard a former NSA employee speak of the “Deep State” as having two hundred layers of depth of agencies, bureaucracies, interests, un-elected employees to ensure it’s AntiChrist agenda no matter who the people elect for President or any other office.
There is a soulless, antiChrist super state arising before our very eyes, which has learned the lessons of the Past, (Hitler, Stalin, Mao), and is armed with a superior technology which will enable it to seek control of the thoughts and deeds of everyone in the world.
It is so huge, complex and fierce, only God himself will be able to disable and destroy it.
This Superstate is proud. Those who serve it’s interests are “the Kings of the Earth and their Rulers” , the elite. They have taken their council together against the LORD and His Messiah, which is why they increasingly reveal themselves to be for everything God is against;Abortion, Homosexuality, Sexual anarchy and Perversion, elimination of private property, False Religion, in short, they are infused with the AntiChrist Spirit.
Job said this in closing, of Leviathan,
Nothing on earth is like him,
One made without fear.
He looks on everything that is high;
He is king over all the sons of pride.”( Job 41:33-34)
This mighty Superstate is called the Beast in the book of Revelation. The Prophet Daniel called him, ” A Beast, Dreadful, unlike all the rest…”( Daniel 7) . This beast comes up out of the Sea (of turbulent humanity in it’s restless energy), to oppose and openly resist God. There will not be any human coalition or nations that will be able to stop this last beast, as we once did Hitler and Tojo.
The LORD shall come and destroy Leviathan with the very Sword of His mouth and in the Brightness of Hos coming.
