Israel bombs two schools, kills 12 Palestinians
Gaza’s Civil Defence reports that an Israeli bombing has hit the al-Zahraa School and the Abdel Fattah Hamoud School, both in the eastern area of Gaza City in the northern Gaza Strip.
The rescue organisation says that seven people were killed in the al-Zahraa School and five in the Hamoud School, bringing the death toll across both of these attacks to 12.
A ‘bloody’ past 24 hours in Khan Younis
Every passing day is a horrific day for Palestinians. Everywhere they go they’re being targeted, forced to flee. Right now, there’s no safe place across the Gaza Strip, including the designated humanitarian safe zones that have been repeatedly targeted.
The past 24 hours have been especially bloody in the central and southern parts of the Strip, mainly the city of Khan Younis. During this time, 27 people have been reported killed, the majority of them women and children. Eighteen of the 27 were killed in Khan Younis city. Five of those 18 were killed inside a tent [last night]. They included a mother and her children. They were incinerated. Other civilian casualties were in the western part of the city and the southeastern part of Deir el-Balah city.
The attacks are happening without any prior warning.
‘Children have a right to be protected from violence’: UNICEF
The UN’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged for “immediate de-escalation” in the Middle East for the sake of the region’s children.
In a statement, the agency said every attack during the Gaza war has brought “news of children among those killed”.
“In less than a year, thousands of children have been killed across the State of Palestine, Israel, Lebanon and the occupied Golan Heights,” it said.
“Beyond those tragic deaths, there are many more boys and girls suffering from injuries that have forever marked their bodies and caused immeasurable damage to their mental health.”
UNICEF warned that if violence escalates further, “the situation for children threatens to get far, far worse”.
“Immediate de-escalation is essential to safeguard the lives and well-being of children, as the alternative is unconscionable,” it said. “Children have a right to be protected from violence and this should always be upheld.”
Witnesses recount Israeli attack on Deir el-Balah ‘safe zone’
We’ve been
reporting on an Israeli attack on Deir el-Balah that killed at least three Palestinians and wounded dozens more.
Witnesses told Al Jazeera in video testimony that the missile attack on Wednesday came with little warning and “ripped apart” the bodies of victims.
“The Israeli forces called some residents and ordered us to leave,” one man said. “They fired a warning missile and we ran for our lives. Three missiles were fired at this area in a matter of minutes.”
Another man said the Israelis “warned people to leave but before anyone could move, Israeli planes fired missiles at us”. The attack left people “dismembered, their bodies ripped apart,” he said.
A third said the targeted site was in a so-called “safe zone”.
“Most of the people here have been displaced numerous times – from Rafah, Khan Younis and central Gaza – now they’re all crammed into Deir el-Balah,” he said. “The Israelis claim it is a safe zone, why are they shelling the area now? This is all false propaganda.”
Israeli rights group releases video clips of settler attacks in occupied West Bank
Yesh Din, which works on rights issues in the occupied territory, said the footage shows Israeli settlers attacking a Palestinian home with rocks and setting fire to a seating area in front of a Palestinian home. In a second clip, cars are set alight in a car park in the Palestinian village of Yatma, located south of Nablus.
According to the
UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, in the seven days up to Monday this week, Israeli settlers carried out 27 attacks against Palestinians in the occupied territory resulting in 17 people injured, including two children, and damage to property.
Since October 7 and this week, the UN has recorded 1,143 settler attacks on Palestinians, including 114 that led to death and injuries, and 964 cases of property damage. Settler violence has also displaced about 1,500 Palestinians, including 720 children, the UN said.
Death toll in Bureij strike rises to 15
Earlier, we reported an Israeli air strike on a home in central Gaza’s Bureij refugee camp.
The death toll from that attack now stands at 15, according to Wafa, up from 10 reported earlier.
In addition, separate Israeli strikes on homes in the nearby Nuseirat camp killed four people, according to medics cited by AFP.
