Jesus quoted the Old Testament in His teachings in the New Testament. So how can any Christian diminish what God Himself never did and never will..
The Old T is certainly fascinating, telling as it does humanity's interactions with God over the centuries, but if God wanted us to stick solely with the Old T, he wouldn't have sent Jesus to give us the New..:)
People quickly realised-
"The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" (John 1:17)
"Through Jesus we are saved, and not through Moses" (Acts 13:39)

Jesus had to tell the snooty priests to get their noses out of their heavyweight theological volumes-
Jesus said:-"You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life." (John 5:39/40)
The WORST thing anybody can do is to tell people that they MUST read the whole Bible and I'm sure that must put many people off Jesus, and will surely make Satan chuckle.
Far better to give people a slimline gospel like this one that can be read inside a week, and if people can't find Jesus in there, not all the study of the Old T is going to help them find him..:)

Most Christians including me don't stick solely to the Old Testament do they?!

The Old Testament is God's message to us just as much as the New Testament is. As I posted above in my previous post the New Testament completes that story of the Old Testament. Jesus being in the New Covenant does not change that. He would not have quoted the Old Testament if it wasn't important.

The Old and New Testaments are inseparable. In the book of Revelation they are called "God's two witnesses" (Revelation 11:3).

Think about it this way, If you chose to read a book, would you start reading it in the middle? Well, it’s no different with the Bible.

If you started most of the way in, you wouldn't have any idea who Abraham and Moses were. Jesus’ allusions to the Israelites and other accounts in the Old Testament wouldn't make sense. And you wouldn’t even know why He had to come in the first place.

But seen as a whole story, the details fall into place including the foundational details of life. Like why are we here? Where did we come from? And how did we get into such a mess?

The WORST thing anybody can do is to tell people that they MUST read the whole Bible and I'm sure that must put many people off Jesus, and will surely make Satan chuckle.
So the patriachs, prophets, Jesus and the aposltles are wrong to tell people to read and study the Bible that was inspired by the Holy Spirit hmmm? The prophet Isaiah said, "To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them" (Isaiah 8:20). How would you know you're being taught a true or false doctrine if you don't read and study the Bible which is God's true doctrine? The Bereans in the book of Acts searched the scriptures to see if what Paul and Silas were teaching them was the truth (Acts 17:10-12).

God wants every single one of us to get to know Him, experience His love, and understand His will as it’s revealed in His Word, the Bible. Why would any Christian have a problem with that and even say it will "put people off Jesus, and will surely make Satan chuckle."

Its Satan who doesn't want people to study the Word of God because He doesn't want them to be saved. He wants them to lose their lives eternally like he's going to.

Far better to give people a slimline gospel like this one that can be read inside a week, and if people can't find Jesus in there, not all the study of the Old T is going to help them find him.
God did not give us 66 books of the Bible so we can have a slimline gospel did He? We are not to discard any of it. That is rejecting God's word. Satan would love that because we would be choosing to not want to know, love and have a closer relationship with God. That would make us lost eternally.

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105).

Yes, the Old T is the solid bedrock on which the New T is built..:)

OLD TESTAMENT FORETOLD JESUS'S ARRIVAL

The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem - fulfilled
"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." (Micah 5:2)

The Messiah would enter Jerusalem on a donkey - fulfilled
"Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey" (Zech 9:9)

The Messiah would be silent before His accusers - fulfilled
"He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth" (Isaiah 53:7).

The Messiah would be flogged and spit on - fulfilled
"I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard, I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting" (Isaiah 50:6)

The Messiah would suffer nails and spearthrust - fulfilled
".. he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5)

The Messiah would be crucified with thieves - fulfilled
"..he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors" (Isaiah 53:12)

The betrayal money would be thrown in the temple for a potters field - fulfilled
"Throw it to the potter- the handsome price at which they priced me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord to the potter" (Zech 11:13)

And the early Christians were happy to take all that on board-
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2)
"Jesus gives us all we need for life" (2 Pet 1:3)

Of course, people were still free to read the Old T if they liked just as they are nowadays..:)

It is proper and right to read the Bible; but your duty does not end there; for you are to search its pages for yourselves. The knowledge of God is not to be gained without mental effort, without prayer for wisdom in order that you may separate from the pure grain of truth the chaff with which men and Satan have misrepresented the doctrines of truth. Satan and his confederacy of human agents have endeavored to mix the chaff of error with the wheat of truth. We should diligently seek for the hidden treasure, and seek wisdom from heaven in order to separate human inventions from the divine commands. The Holy Spirit will aid the seeker for great and precious truths which relate to the plan of redemption. I would impress upon all the fact that a casual reading of the Scriptures is not enough. We must search, and this means the doing of all the word implies. As the miner eagerly explores the earth to discover its veins of gold, so you are to explore the word of God for the hidden treasure that Satan has so long sought to hide from man. The Lord says, “If any man willeth to do His will, he shall know of the teaching.” John 7:17 (R. V.) FE 307.2

The word of God is truth and light, and is to be a lamp unto your feet, to guide you every step of the way to the gates of the city of God. It is for this reason that Satan has made such desperate efforts to obstruct the path that has been cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in. You are not to take your ideas to the Bible, and make your opinions a center around which truth is to revolve. You are to lay aside your ideas at the door of investigation, and with humble, subdued hearts, with self hid in Christ, with earnest prayer, you are to seek wisdom from God. You should feel that you must know the revealed will of God, because it concerns your personal, eternal welfare. The Bible is a directory by which you may know the way to eternal life. You should desire above all things that you may know the will and ways of the Lord. You should not search for the purpose of finding texts of Scripture that you can construe to prove your theories; for the word of God declares that this is wresting the Scriptures to your own destruction. You must empty yourselves of every prejudice, and come in the spirit of prayer to the investigation of the word of God.
