K-Pop Superstars BTS Have Been Ruled Ineligible For The Best New Artist Grammy

"Eligibility for the upcoming Grammy Awards closed on September 30, which means that this is the time for predictions about who might snag a nomination or what songs and albums will be woefully ignored is now. Everybody seems to have an opinion about what deserves to be recognized, but when it comes to the most prestigious prize in the music industry, there are strict rules, and those boundaries can keep some popular chart-toppers from being recognized.
According to a source close to the awards, BTS has been ruled ineligible for the coveted prize.
While this year was the one in which they changed all the rules about who can rule the charts in America, BTS has been together and releasing music in the U.S. for years, and that is why they won’t be able to compete for this trophy. They landed their first top 10 album back in September 2017, when their EP
Love Yourself: Her peaked at No. 7. Technically, that success took place in the previous year’s eligibility period.
Before that, they placed four other titles on the Billboard 200 over a period of a few years, though none of them made a major impact (only one broke into the Top 40). So while it’s arguable that they didn’t rise to prominence until this year, they have simply released too much music to compete for this once-in-a-lifetime honor.
According to the Recording Academy, in order to be eligible for Best New Artist consideration, any act “must have released a minimum of five singles/tracks or one album, but no more than 30 singles/tracks or three albums in their career to date.”
With several albums having made it to the most important chart in the U.S. throughout the years, it’s clear that they have gifted their fans with more than 30 songs, so this isn’t the vertical for them.
With BTS out of the running for Best New Artist, it’s anybody’s guess who will fill the eight slots available, and the public won’t find out until nominations are announced on December 5."
