Let's imagine that 99 percent of the world's population have died of a plague, so I thought of starting this thread to explore the survival of our small group of survivors.
To begin with, we've got out of the cities and have taken over this big country house (after giving the plague victim owners a decent cremation) and called it 'Doomsday Hall'.

It seems to tick all the right boxes, namely-
1- Well away from the cities and their violent gangs.
2- Big house with a number of rooms.
3- Food from the woods and fields.
4- Water and fish from the river. (We can also sling our buckets of sewage in there, downstream of course).
5- More fish from the sea, seaweed from the beach,and cockles and mussel things from the rockpools. (We can also boil seawater to get salt)
6- Temperate climate.
Have I overlooked anything?

Poppet, if you glance at my opening post you'll see that I said a plague has wiped out 99% of humans, including the owners of the Hall.
We gave them decent funerals and I'm sure they wouldn't mind us moving in..

Well I've been hanging in survival/prepping forums for years, plus I've won internet strategy game trophies, so I like to think i'll do alright after an Apocalypse..

2. You're then going to invite a whole bunch of strangers to live in the now empty plague victims house.

3. You're going to dump raw sewage into the nearest river ( did the previous sewage system die of the plague too)

1- The only bodies we dispose of are the couple of plague victims who owned the house, and we cremated them like I said.
2- I can't run the place on my own, so I'll need to form a group of about 20 people, preferably with some skills like agriculture, medicine, hunting, fishing, cooking, craftsmanship, weapons etc. (Any VC members want to step up to the plate?)
3- Rivers have been nature's sewage disposal things for thousands of years..

PS- 20 seems a reasonable size for our group, as the surrounding area will probably easily produce enough food for us, plus we'll have this small veg plot out back-

No, but without power the pumps for the water system won't work.

Rivers have been nature's sewage disposal things for thousands of years.

An outhouse or dumping buckets of water in the toilet tank would be better options.

Sure, what the hell. In your scenario, I wouldn't have many options.

Fair point. However, surely if you were inviting 20 people in you'd make sure that at least some of them had certain skills and remember you'd almost have run of the planet.

Yep.

Maybe it was just an example or it is close to him. If it's the latter, I wouldn't be able to cross the pond to get there. I would need to find somewhere else...there would probably be pockets of survivors all over.

Let me toss a few clarifications into the playpen-

1- Doomsday Hall is an abstract and can be anywhere you want it to be in any temperate zone in the world, eg USA, Europe, Oz, NZ, etc.

2- Livestock was completely untouched by the plague, it only wiped out humans.

3- What's an outhouse or "toilet tank"?

4- As I said, the plague only trashed 99% of humans, so there'll still be enough left to form into survival groups like ours, and some might be nasty, raiding us to steal our food or eat us.

5- Look at my earlier pics again and notice it's all candle power because power stations have all stopped working..

Great, we'll round up as much as we can.

3- What's an outhouse or "toilet tank"?

outhouse is basically a hole ine ground. The tank is the part the part that holds water for flushing. I keep enough water on hand for unforeseen power outages. Will store more for foreseen (hurricane).\

They'd have a better chance of survival tickling a tiger's ass in a phone booth than coming after our group.

In fairness, they looked like fake candles. Can be replaced with real candles tho.

Doesn’t mean you can just move in and take over their house. What’s wrong with living in your house? This seems more about taking what’s not yours then living in a dystopian future...since right away you moved in and started living their better life.

You must have ODD. 99% of the population is dead. Should past ownership count at all? I'm sure the cave men moved on after finding a cave with skeletons.
