Didn’t want to say I told you so, but...

CONSIDER THIS AN IMPORTANT PSA.
This is very interesting to me. Wearing a mask outside of the hospital is a new concept for me and I've been struggling with it recently. The article is from April 21, so I checked to see how it was holding up a couple of weeks later and it looks like they are still going in the right direction. They have the lowest number of active cases besides South Korea right now meaning they are not getting new cases at the same rate as other countries that also have over 15,000 positive cases.

I’ve been tracking numbers in the northeast for a while and was utterly confused why they were continuing to rise exponentially even three weeks out from stay at home orders. They only recently started coming down in a way that was noticeable and inspires hope.. and that started about a week after the mask orders were given. Correlation does not equal causation but it was enough to raise my eyebrows especially since there has been so much speculation about this being more airborne then admitted. I’m curious to look up mask protocols in the various states and countries and see if there actually is a correlation more then just face value.

I remember you saying this, which was actually one of the reasons I have been struggling with the subject of masks. Airborne has always meant n95 mask, which made me question wearing a mask at all if it is not a droplet. I don't want to say it isn't possible, but n95 masks have always been disposable, which means there is no way to expect to mask a population appropriately.

I was even looking up some diy n95 masks. People have gotten creative and are using ac filters to make layered masks at home, so it is good to see some evidence that it won't need to be this complicated. In my mind, I know it is all relative to droplet size circulating in the air, but it is still foreign for me to consider a surgical mask for something we are calling airborne.

It will be interesting to see how the next two weeks play out. I know a lot of places are now requiring masks, but I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to it in relation to numbers either.

I have seen some preliminary research hypothesizing that virus particles are attaching to pollution particles in the air - as a possible explanation for why certain poorer communities are getting hit harder by the virus. If that is true then one could posit that the total particle would be larger then on its own, making the use of any mask potentially more effective and not necessitating an actual n95.

It could also be some sort of placebo effect.. wearing the mask psychologically puts you in a frame of mind to be more cautious, stand further away, refrain from touching your face, wash your hands etc.

Not a scientist per se.. psychology doesn’t count imo. But different avenues worth looking down imo.

Hey JustJess - sorry I got into it with you yesterday. I don’t think you’re a bully but I’m also not some ignorant racist. I just hate news articles that I feel over simplify issues and say “whites” like some blanket derogatory term - like everyone is the same. It aggravates me as it seems to be over simplistic and somewhat lazy reporting. Anyway just wanted to say that. :)

No hard feelings. We’re good.

I was going to say I guess it’s a good thing I refuse to get the flu shot :)

775 million in cuts to the Ohio state budget.

They are cutting education and health care for poor people. But not cutting money to the prisons. So basically the school to prison pipeline is only being reinforced. And this is all in the name of good health?

What a total crock of shit.

My husband had a friend who was a germaphobe and was always washing his hands but he was also always sick. My husband told him that maybe that’s why he was always sick..so he stopped washing this hands so much and wasn’t so sick..food for thought especially about herd immunity.
