Can this be true? That people are fundamentally good...or is it like the Bible says? And if we are all fundamentally good..what changed us? No one had to teach us to sin did they? Don’t mom and dad’s try to teach us to be good?

Romans‬ ‭3:12‬ ‭
ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:23‬ ‭
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

Born Kind? Researchers Prove Altruism Begins In Infancy
SEATTLE — Human nature is complicated, no doubt, but most of us would at least like to think that people arefundamentally good. If you’re a big believer in humanity’s best qualities, a new study is backing up your beliefs in a major way. It appears that babies may be instinctively altruistic.
Researchers studied nearly 100 19-month old infants, and discovered that the babies were quick to share their food with researchers, even when they themselves were undoubtedly hungry.
The study’s authors, a group of researchers from the University of Washington’s Learning & Brain Sciences division (I-LABS), say their findings effectively prove that altruistic behavior begins in infancy. Furthermore, they believe their work suggests social experiences very early in one’s life can shape their behavior towards others later on in adolescence and adulthood.
“We think altruism is important to study because it is one of the most distinctive aspects of being human. It is an important part of the moral fabric of society,” says lead author Rodolfo Cortes Barragan, a postdoctoral researcher at I-LABS, in a release. “We adults help each other when we see another in need and we do this even if there is a cost to the self. So we tested the roots of this in infants.”

For what it's worth

Words of Wisdom 5

“In every person there is a spirit-Being (soul). In every spirit-Being there is Intelligence.
In every Intelligence there is Thought.
In every Thought there is either Good or Evil*. In every Evil there is Death.

In every Good there is Life. In every Life there is God.”

“Grant O God Thy Protection.
And in Protection, Strength.
And in Strength, Understanding.
And in Understanding, [True] Knowledge.
And in [True] Knowledge, the knowledge of [Thy] Justice. And in the knowledge of Justice, the Love of it.

And in that Love, the love of all Existences.
And in the love of all Existences, the Love of God. God, and all Goodness.”

* Good (God) or Evil (d/evil) - Truth or untruth.

I think that most people are born kind.

But I think they are also weak, lazy and easily swayed. But mostly they are kind and well intentioned.

I have no source for this. It has just been my personal observation.

Most people want to do the right thing so long as it does not put them out too much.

It is why charities keep plugging adverts about sad donkeys and hungry children. They are providing an easy way of assuaging an individuals feelings of guilt.
If people were not essentially good they wouldn't feel the necessary guilt and the advertising campaigns would fail and cease.
As they do not cease, but instead increase, I assume that people are feeling that necessary guilt.

Very young children always learn by example, not by instruction or discipline. We all have an inner compass that guides us, especially infants and young toddlers who have not yet learned that there is also the option to ignore it. So it's not something that is always necessary to be taught, since it's our natural state before ever witnessing and placing trust in the idea that selfishness is even an option.

Children are highly impressionable of course, and their early development relies on developing trust for those closest to them during those most impressionable years. Because of this, they will quickly learn to follow the example given by those whom they trust the most. This is why many parents will assume that they had to "teach the child to be good" when the reality is that the child was very likely only following the parents' (or someone else they know and trust) example in the first place.

What about in childhood..having to be taught right from wrong? Does that put a monkey wrench into your theory?

I kinda wonder if people think that by giving to sad charities they are more saying that they are good people then..not that they think they are good people, but that by giving they can think they are good.

While I do think that kids follow the parents example..I don’t think that accounts fully for kids having to be taught right from wrong. I recently had a 1.5 year old hit me in the back of the head. I’m sure that her parents didn‘t teach her this behavior.
Little kids need to often be shown how to be nice to animals as they like to hurt them in an attempt to love them. Throwing fits in general is the m.o. of the 2 year old...who taught them that? The parent? I don’t think that’s so as its well known that there is a thing called the terrible two’s. People aren’t basically good..as the Bible so rightly points out.

Well you're not totally wrong; there IS often more to it. Most importantly, a child should not be watching television at that age (or any age, really). Also, so-called terrible twos is almost always diet related. Stop feeding children a poor diet, and make sure to avoid artificial sweeteners and red dye at the very least. Ironically, religion tends to train people to mistrust and ignore their inner compass in favor of operating only upon belief.

Would that also be the inner compass that tells a 4 year old that they are the opposite sex or gay?

I don’t think that watching television or poor diet is where kids get hitting from honestly..I think it all comes naturally to them. That’s why you have to teach kids to be good.

its not a theory. just an opinion.

I can support it with the bible, if you like.

Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They knew they were naked. they knew right from wrong, and their children likewise, otherwise just leaving them untaught would return them the the state of eden, and undo original sin.

Genesis 2 - 3, I think.

LOL if you say so, Lisa. Why is it that very young children are naturally so empathetic and giving before they EVER exhibit this kind of behavior? How do you explain that?

When kids are kind it's often for selfish reasons and altruism isn't that widespread. As a matter of fact, you're more surprised when someone is being altruistic than the contrary yet in general we don't expect people to have evil intents against us.
It may have something to do with us thinking that we know deep inside us what is the good thing to do when in fact, we tend to do something that look good for our personal interests.

There are verses that best describes my thoughts about this:

"everyone did what was right in his own eyes."
Judges 17:6

"Truly, this only I have found: That God made man upright, But they have sought out many schemes."
Ecclesiastes 7:29

I believe most of our problems revolves around ego and once you see kids in groups, you realize that narcissism is more prevalent than altruism.

Ya, they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil but before that they were good..after that not so much and neither were their offspring. We all sin..we are born with sin in our hearts, in our nature so we aren’t born good or kind or anything else. We have to learn to do right and be good, not the other way around. And the other portion of that, is we also cannot be good without God‘s help. We often don’t know what good is..but God who isn‘t evil and hates evil knows what is good. He really is the only one who can help us in our problem with sin.

They can be loving but then they pull your hair. The child that hit me was so sweet to me right before she hit me in the head...

Kids can be very cruel to each other when in groups in fact. Seems like being bullies is a right of passage for them (some stay assholes even into adulthood). I'm not gonna idealize children now just because I'm an adult.

Children are like adults..they can be really sweet..but then they can also be very bad.

That has nothing to do with the question I asked. Do you follow your inner compass or do you falsely believe it can't be trusted?

Sure it does...it means that people aren’t born good.

I follow God who is the only One who knows good all the time and is the only One that can be trusted. If I trust myself..I am going to lead myself into sin..lead myself to what I want and not everything we want is good.
