I am shocked (and not really, since it was present in many other languages and countries) by the comments about the fact that they punished people, if they spoke French. Then in addition to taking the lands of the Native Americans, who are forced to live in camps. Where the only time, that I saw an Indian living in a tent, it was in Brittany:

I, most of the time, am monolingual.

Wish I was multilingual all the time though, *sigh*...
