Is there any objective perspective why this horrible crime is happening? Like political history or any context at all? I watched the footages in Twitter and video too. They seem so real. My stomach is churning just thinking about it. I couldn't even enjoy my dinner after scrolling down the hashtags.

My questions are, why did the footages leaked? Who leaked them? What would they gain after? Who would benefit from this oppression?

In my country, this issue brings huge the tension between Chinese minority and Muslim.

I wonder, if this is the point. To break people, community apart.

What to do to stop this oppression?

Just came across information regarding the 10 stages of Genocide
The Uyghur population and the Rohingya both are dealing with the 10th stage of genocide wherein their governements are actively pursuing a policy of denial. Kashmir under the Indian gov't is at stage 8 which is persecution.
By Gregory H. Stanton, President, Genocide Watch
The Ten Stages of Genocide

By Dr. Gregory H. Stanton[1]

"Genocide is a process that develops in ten stages that are predictable but not inexorable. At each stage, preventive measures can stop it. The process is not linear. Stages may occur simultaneously. Logically, later stages must be preceded by earlier stages. But all stages continue to operate throughout the process.

➔ 1. CLASSIFICATION: All cultures have categories to distinguish people into “us and them” by ethnicity, race, religion, or nationality: German and Jew, Hutu and Tutsi. Bipolar societies that lack mixed categories, such as Rwanda and Burundi, are the most likely to have genocide.

The main preventive measure at this early stage is to develop universalistic institutions that transcend ethnic or racial divisions, that actively promote tolerance and understanding, and that promote classifications that transcend the divisions. The Roman Catholic Church could have played this role in Rwanda, had it not been riven by the same ethnic cleavages as Rwandan society. Promotion of a common language in countries like Tanzania has also promoted transcendent national identity. This search for common ground is vital to early prevention of genocide.

➔ 2. SYMBOLIZATION: We give names or other symbols to the classifications. We name people “Jews” or “Gypsies,” or distinguish them by colors or dress; and apply the symbols to members of groups. Classification and symbolization are universally human and do not necessarily result in genocide unless they lead to dehumanization. When combined with hatred, symbols may be forced upon unwilling members of pariah groups: the yellow star for Jews under Nazi rule, the blue scarf for people from the Eastern Zone in Khmer Rouge Cambodia.

To combat symbolization, hate symbols can be legally forbidden (swastikas in Germany) as can hate speech. Group marking like gang clothing or tribal scarring can be outlawed, as well. The problem is that legal limitations will fail if unsupported by popular cultural enforcement. Though Hutu and Tutsi were forbidden words in Burundi until the 1980’s, code words replaced them. If widely supported, however, denial of symbolization can be powerful, as it was in Bulgaria, where the government refused to supply enough yellow badges and at least eighty percent of Jews did not wear them, depriving the yellow star of its significance as a Nazi symbol for Jews.

➔ 3. DISCRIMINATION: A dominant group uses law, custom, and political power to deny the rights of other groups. The powerless group may not be accorded full civil rights, voting rights, or even citizenship. The dominant group is driven by an exclusionary ideology that would deprive less powerful groups of their rights. The ideology advocates monopolization or expansion of power by the dominant group. It legitimizes the victimization of weaker groups. Advocates of exclusionary ideologies are often charismatic, expressing resentments of their followers, attracting support from the masses. Examples include the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 in Nazi Germany, which stripped Jews of their German citizenship, and prohibited their employment by the government and by universities. Denial of citizenship to the Rohingya Muslim minority in Burma is a current example.

Prevention against discrimination means full political empowerment and citizenship rights for all groups in a society. Discrimination on the basis of nationality, ethnicity, race or religion should be outlawed. Individuals should have the right to sue the state, corporations, and other individuals if their rights are violated.

➔ 4. DEHUMANIZATION: One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, insects or diseases. Dehumanization overcomes the normal human revulsion against murder. At this stage, hate propaganda in print and on hate radios is used to vilify the victim group. The majority group is taught to regard the other group as less than human, and even alien to their society. They are indoctrinated to believe that “We are better off without them.” The powerless group can become so depersonalized that they are actually given numbers rather than names, as Jews were in the death camps. They are equated with filth, impurity, and immorality. Hate speech fills the propaganda of official radio, newspapers, and speeches.

To combat dehumanization, incitement to genocide should not be confused with protected speech. Genocidal societies lack constitutional protection for countervailing speech, and should be treated differently than democracies. Local and international leaders should condemn the use of hate speech and make it culturally unacceptable. Leaders who incite genocide should be banned from international travel and have their foreign finances frozen. Hate radio stations should be jammed or shut down, and hate propaganda banned. Hate crimes and atrocities should be promptly punished.

➔ 5. ORGANIZATION: Genocide is always organized, usually by the state, often using militias to provide deniability of state responsibility. (An example is the Sudanese government’s support and arming of the Janjaweed in Darfur.) Sometimes organization is informal (Hindu mobs led by local RSS militants during Indian partition) or decentralized (jihadist terrorist groups.) Special army units or militias are often trained and armed. Arms are purchased by states and militias, often in violation of UN Arms Embargos, to facilitate acts of genocide. States organize secret police to spy on, arrest, torture, and murder people suspected of opposition to political leaders. Special training is given to murderous militias and special army killing units.

To combat this stage, membership in genocidal militias should be outlawed. Their leaders should be denied visas for foreign travel and their foreign assets frozen. The UN should impose arms embargoes on governments and citizens of countries involved in genocidal massacres, and create commissions to investigate violations, as was done in post-genocide Rwanda, and use national legal systems to prosecute those who violate such embargos.

  1. POLARIZATION: Extremists drive the groups apart. Hate groups broadcast polarizing propaganda. Motivations for targeting a group are indoctrinated through mass media. Laws may forbid intermarriage or social interaction. Extremist terrorism targets moderates, intimidating and silencing the center. Moderates from the perpetrators’ own group are most able to stop genocide, so are the first to be arrested and killed. Leaders in targeted groups are the next to be arrested and murdered. The dominant group passes emergency laws or decrees that grants them total power over the targeted group. The laws erode fundamental civil rights and liberties. Targeted groups are disarmed to make them incapable of self-defense, and to ensure that the dominant group has total control.

Prevention may mean security protection for moderate leaders or assistance to human rights groups. Assets of extremists may be seized, and visas for international travel denied to them. Coups d’état by extremists should be opposed by international sanctions. Vigorous objections should be raised to disarmament of opposition groups. If necessary they should be armed to defend themselves.

➔ 7. PREPARATION: Plans are made for genocidal killings. National or perpetrator group leaders plan the “Final Solution” to the Jewish, Armenian, Tutsi or other targeted group “question.” They often use euphemisms to cloak their intentions, such as referring to their goals as “ethnic cleansing,” “purification,” or “counter-terrorism.” They build armies, buy weapons and train their troops and militias. They indoctrinate the populace with fear of the victim group. Leaders often claim that “if we don’t kill them, they will kill us,” disguising genocide as self-defense. Acts of genocide are disguised as counter-insurgency if there is an ongoing armed conflict or civil war. There is a sudden increase in inflammatory rhetoric and hate propaganda with the objective of creating fear of the other group. Political processes such as peace accords that threaten the total dominance of the genocidal group or upcoming elections that may cost them their grip on total power may actually trigger genocide.

Prevention of preparation may include arms embargos and commissions to enforce them. It should include prosecution of incitement and conspiracy to commit genocide, both crimes under Article 3 of the Genocide Convention.

➔ 8. PERSECUTION: Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity. Death lists are drawn up. In state sponsored genocide, members of victim groups may be forced to wear identifying symbols. Their property is often expropriated. Sometimes they are even segregated into ghettoes, deported into concentration camps, or confined to a famine-struck region and starved. They are deliberately deprived of resources such as water or food in order to slowly destroy them. Programs are implemented to prevent procreation through forced sterilization or abortions. Children are forcibly taken from their parents. The victim group’s basic human rights become systematically abused through extrajudicial killings, torture and forced displacement. Genocidal massacres begin. They are acts of genocide because they intentionally destroy part of a group. The perpetrators watch for whether such massacres meet any international reaction. If not, they realize that that the international community will again be bystanders and permit another genocide.

At this stage, a Genocide Emergency must be declared. If the political will of the great powers, regional alliances, or U.N. Security Council or the U.N. General Assembly can be mobilized, armed international intervention should be prepared, or heavy assistance provided to the victim group to prepare for its self-defense. Humanitarian assistance should be organized by the U.N. and private relief groups for the inevitable tide of refugees to come.

➔ 9. EXTERMINATION begins, and quickly becomes the mass killing legally called “genocide.” It is “extermination” to the killers because they do not believe their victims to be fully human. When it is sponsored by the state, the armed forces often work with militias to do the killing. Sometimes the genocide results in revenge killings by groups against each other, creating the downward whirlpool-like cycle of bilateral genocide (as in Burundi). Acts of genocide demonstrate how dehumanized the victims have become. Already dead bodies are dismembered; r*pe is used as a tool of war to genetically alter and eradicate the other group. Destruction of cultural and religious property is employed to annihilate the group’s existence from history. The era of “total war” began in World War II. Firebombing did not differentiate civilians from non-combatants. The civil wars that broke out after the end of the Cold War have also not differentiated civilians and combatants. They result in widespread war crimes. Mass rapes of women and girls have become a characteristic of all modern genocides. All men of fighting age are murdered in some genocides. In total genocides all the members of the targeted group are exterminated.

At this stage, only rapid and overwhelming armed intervention can stop genocide. Real safe areas or refugee escape corridors should be established with heavily armed international protection. (An unsafe “safe” area is worse than none at all.) The U.N. Standing High Readiness Brigade, EU Rapid Response Force, or regional forces — should be authorized to act by the U.N. Security Council if the genocide is small. For larger interventions, a multilateral force authorized by the U.N. should intervene. If the U.N. Security Council is paralyzed, regional alliances must act anyway under Chapter VIII of the U.N. Charter or the UN General Assembly should authorize action under the Uniting for Peace Resolution GARes. 330 (1950), which has been used 13 times for such armed intervention. Since 2005, the international responsibility to protect transcends the narrow interests of individual nation states. If strong nations will not provide troops to intervene directly, they should provide the airlift, equipment, and financial means necessary for regional states to intervene.

➔ 10. DENIAL is the final stage that lasts throughout and always follows genocide. It is among the surest indicators of further genocidal massacres. The perpetrators of genocide dig up the mass graves, burn the bodies, try to cover up the evidence and intimidate the witnesses. They deny that they committed any crimes, and often blame what happened on the victims. They block investigations of the crimes, and continue to govern until driven from power by force, when they flee into exile. There they remain with impunity, like Pol Pot or Idi Amin, unless they are captured and a tribunal is established to try them.

The best response to denial is punishment by an international tribunal or national courts. There the evidence can be heard, and the perpetrators punished. Tribunals like the Yugoslav, Rwanda or Sierra Leone Tribunals, the tribunal to try the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, or the International Criminal Court may not deter the worst genocidal killers. But with the political will to arrest and prosecute them, some may be brought to justice. When possible, local proceedings should provide forums for hearings of the evidence against perpetrators who were not the main leaders and planners of a genocide, with opportunities for restitution and reconciliation. The Rwandan gaçaça trials are one example. Justice should be accompanied by education in schools and the media about the facts of a genocide, the suffering it caused its victims, the motivations of its perpetrators, and the need for restoration of the rights of its victims."

I saw videos from Twitter where a man destroyed someone's fingers with hammer, and the victim was bound and tied. Also, a kid got kicked by a group of people. He screamed in pain. Some photos a mother being surgically opened and her baby was lying on her side.

The torture methods reminds me of Unit 731.

Indeed, human can exceed the evil.

It gives me nightmares. I cannot shake the images out of my head.

The thing is, i think Muslims relationship with Chinese people have been complicated.

I mean, we have soft spot for Christianity. When Jesus is mocked, our hearts also bleed. Same regarding Moses.

Because we hold them dear as brother/sister of Abrahamic religion.

But with Chinese, it is easy to resent them. Most Chinese would tell you that they are Atheists if you ask if they believe God or not.

The very concept of this, is very strange for us.

I never mean any harm for Chinese people. I had a best friend who was from the Mainland. I learned great deal from her. I think highly of Chinese culture and tradition. One of the most profound tradition.

However, it has never been easy. Especially in my country where Communism has and still regarded as diabolical ideology.

So, I still think the situation in Uighur can shift our perspective towards certain race or group of people, in order to break the community apart.

I search images and videos in twitter you told about and I cant even look at it, this is too much. I also find a video which summarize the situation in East Turkestan.

Some people say that china have to do this because Muslim can try to do jihad. But the real situation is that Uyghurs are living in their own land (historically), China is the one came and claim that the land is belong to them. They don't have to follow Chinese beliefs or cultures, they can do whatever in their own land.
China try to oppress and assimilate Uyghurs but these assimilation process turn into genocide.
If I remember correctly through traditional drama, the Chinese used to regard Uyghurs as tribes with beauty. See, they have big eyes and some have European blood in them, so some would have blue/grey eyes. Also traditional Uyghurs's dancing is entrancing. The emperor used to invite them or marry the leader's daughter to form alliance with them.

Uyghurs actresses also regarded as the most beautiful ones in Chinese's entertainment industry.

What changed? The perception of people does. When you stop see other fellow human being as human being.

The reasons for being sent to the camps are arbitrary and damning:mad:

Things which may cause you to detained without trial and locked away in an education camp indefinitely, in Xinjiang, China, 2018:

  • Owning a tent
  • Owning welding equipment
  • Owning extra food
  • Owning a compass
  • Owning multiple knives
  • Abstaining from alcohol
  • Abstaining from cigarettes
  • Wailing, publicly grieving, or otherwise acting sad when your parents die
  • Performing a traditional funeral
  • Inviting more than 5 people to your house without registering with the police department
  • Wearing a scarf in the presence of the PRC flag
  • Wearing a hijab (if you are under 45)
  • Going to a mosque
  • Praying
  • Fasting
  • Listening to a religious lecture
  • Telling others not to swear
  • Telling others not to sin
  • Eating breakfast before the sun comes up
  • Arguing with an official
  • Sending a petition that complains about local officials
  • Not allowing officials to sleep in your bed, eat your food, and live in your house
  • Not having your government ID on your person
  • Not letting officials take your DNA
  • Not letting officials scan your irises
  • Not letting officials download everything you have on your phone
  • Not making voice recordings to give to officials
  • Speaking your mother language in school
  • Speaking your mother language in government work groups
  • Speaking with someone abroad (with skype, etc.)
  • Speaking with someone who has traveled abroad
  • Having traveled abroad yourself
  • Merely knowing someone who has traveled abroad
  • Publicly stating that China is inferior to some other country
  • Having too many children
  • Having a VPN
  • Having Whatsapp
  • Watching a video filmed abroad
  • Wearing a shirt with Arabic lettered writing on it
  • Wearing a full beard
  • Wearing any clothes with religious iconography
  • Not attending mandatory propaganda classes
  • Not attending mandatory flag raising ceremonies
  • Not attending public struggle sessions (Cultural Revolution style)
  • Refusing to denounce your family members in these public struggle sessions
  • Being related to anyone who has done any of the above
  • Trying to kill yourself when detained by the police
  • Trying to kill yourself when in the education camps proper.

In Hong Kong, people support Uyghurs and afraid of facing similar oppression
That is totally understandable!

I just learned about the tafseer of Surah Al-Burooj. It explicates in details that justice will be served on the Day of Resurrection. And the psychology of the oppressors, why they do what they do.

Absolutely related with the situation of Ughgyur.

https://english.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2020/6/29/china-forces-birth-control-on-uighurs-to-suppress-population

The state regularly subjects minority women to pregnancy checks, and forces intrauterine devices, sterilisation and even abortion on hundreds of thousands, the interviews and data show. Even while the use of IUDs and sterilisation has fallen nationwide, it is rising sharply in Xinjiang.

The population control measures are backed by mass detention both as a threat and as a punishment for failure to comply. Having too many children is a major reason people are sent to detention camps, the AP found, with the parents of three or more ripped away from their families unless they can pay huge fines. Police raid homes, terrifying parents as they search for hidden children.

[...] Across the Xinjiang region, birth rates continue to plummet, falling nearly 24 percent last year alone — compared to just 4.2 percent nationwide, statistics show.

The hundreds of millions of dollars the government pours into birth control has transformed Xinjiang from one of China's fastest-growing regions to among its slowest in just a few years, according to new research obtained by The Associated Press in advance of publication by China scholar Adrian Zenz.

[...] Officials and armed police began pounding on doors, looking for kids and pregnant women. Minority residents were ordered to attend weekly flag-raising ceremonies, where officials threatened detention if they didn't register all their children, according to interviews backed by attendance slips and booklets. Notices found by the AP show that local governments set up or expanded systems to reward those who report illegal births.

In some areas, women were ordered to take gynecology exams after the ceremonies, they said. In others, officials outfitted special rooms with ultrasound scanners for pregnancy tests.

"Test all who need to be tested," ordered a township directive from 2018. "Detect and deal with those who violate policies early."

[...] Another woman, Gulbakhar Jalilova, confirmed that detainees in her camp were forced to abort their children. She also saw a new mother, still leaking breast milk, who did not know what had happened to her infant. And she met doctors and medical students who were detained for helping Uighurs dodge the system and give birth at home.

In December 2017, on a visit from Kazakhstan back to China, Gulzia Mogdin was taken to a hospital after police found WhatsApp on her phone. A urine sample revealed she was two months pregnant with her third child. Officials told Mogdin she needed to get an abortion and threatened to detain her brother if she didn't.

During the procedure, medics inserted an electric vacuum into her womb and sucked her fetus out of her body. She was taken home and told to rest, as they planned to take her to a camp.

Months later, Mogdin made it back to Kazakhstan, where her husband lives.

"That baby was going to be the only baby we had together," said Mogdin, who had recently remarried. "I cannot sleep. It's terribly unfair."

[...] The IUD still in Omirzakh's womb has now sunk into her flesh, causing inflammation and piercing back pain, "like being stabbed with a knife". For Omirzakh, it's a bitter reminder of everything she's lost — and the plight of those she left behind.

That's horrifying.

After I posted this, I did minor researches regarding Xinjiang. The thing is it seems the struggle has been going on for centuries. The people of borders they said. Maybe the root of the issues is more political. Which is funny. Dilraba Dimurat is Uigyur and she has been the top actress for month now in mainland. A lot of Uigyur actresses are fame with their beauty and the government wants to eradicate them.

It is horrifying. Forced abortions, IUD implantations, regular pregnancy checks, taking away their children, stopping them from fasting in Ramadan, not allowing women to wear hijab, organ harvesting, reeducation and indoctrination camps.

Let's not forget that as horrible as this situation is, i've noticed it's been highlighted a lot more in western media because it's by China.

Unlike other conflicts, genocides and oppression led by the US/western EU and Israel, i.e. Syria, Yemen, Rohingya, Kashmir, Palestine, Afghanistan, etc. which is swept under the carpet. :(

Also in India.

"On 23 February 2020 in Delhi, Hindu nationalist mobs roamed the streets burning and looting mosques together with Muslim homes, shops and businesses. They killed or burned alive Muslims who could not escape and the victims were largely unprotected by the police. At least 37 people, almost all Muslims, were killed and many others beaten half to death: a two-year-old baby was stripped by a gang to see if he was circumcised – as Muslims usually are, but Hindus are not. Some Muslim women pretended to be Hindus in order to escape. "

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - China is murdering members of the Falun Gong spiritual group and harvesting their organs for transplant, a panel of lawyers and experts said on Monday as they invited further investigations into a potential genocide.

Members said they had heard clear evidence forced organ harvesting had taken place over at least 20 years in a final judgement from the China Tribunal, an independent panel set up by a campaign group to examine the issue.

Beijing has repeatedly denied accusations by human rights researchers and scholars that it forcibly takes organs from prisoners of conscience and said it stopped using organs from executed prisoners in 2015.

But the panel said it was “satisfied” that the practice was still taking place, with imprisoned Falun Gong members “probably the principal source” of organs for forced harvesting.

Falun Gong is a spiritual group based around meditation that China banned 20 years ago after 10,000 members appeared at the central leadership compound in Beijing in silent protest. Thousands of members have since been jailed.

It was less clear if the Uighur Muslim minority had been victims, the tribunal found, thought it said they were vulnerable to “being used as a bank of organs”.

A report from ASPI (an Australian think tank) reveals that big brand names like Nike, Apple, Abercrombie, Amazon, H&M are using factories in which Uyghur Muslims are employed as slave labourers. They are taken out of Xianjiang, their native state, to 27 factories in nine Chinese provinces, where they are forced to work, and their families that remain in Xianjiang are monitored, to prevent the Uyghur workers from leaving the factories.

A short article summarising some of the ASPI report:

The full ASPI report

Extract from Sunday Guardian Live article:

The report released by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) titled “Uyghurs for Sale” stated that big, well-known global companies in the field of clothing, technology and automotive sectors like Abercrombie & Fitch, Amazon, GAP, H&M, Nike, Jack & Jones, Sharp, Siemens, Skechers, ASUS, Apple, Samsung, Huawei, BMW, Volkswagen, Sony, Polo Ralph Lauren, Puma, Victoria’s Secret, Vivo, among others, are using Uyghur Muslims as “forced labour” in their factories in China.

[...] The factories in which these Uyghur Muslims are made to work form a major chunk of the supply chain of these big brands. For example, in January 2020, around 600 ethnic minority workers from Xinjiang were employed at Qingdao Taekwang Shoes Co. Ltd, which makes shoes for the American company Nike. The workforce in this factory are mostly Uyghur women from Hotan and Kashgar towns in China, which are remote parts of southern Xinjiang that the Chinese government has described as “backward” and “disturbed by religious extremism”.

[...] The ASPI report claims that this is a “state-sponsored” programme where the Uyghurs who are brought in as labour force have no option but to continue with their given assignment as escape route is not easy.

“The workers in these factories are brought and kept in dormitories after they finish their ‘re-education’ in the camps. In their work place, they lead a harsh and segregated life. They are forbidden to practice religion and are required to compulsorily take Mandarin lessons. Most strikingly, local governments and private brokers are paid a price per head by the Xinjiang provincial government to organise the labour assignments,” the report said.

The report also brings to light how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) cadres surveil the workers’ families who are left back in the Xinjiang province as a caution to the workers that if they try to flee or are found to be indulging in misconduct in the factory, their families could face consequences.

The report also quoted a religious and human rights NGO, Bitter Winter, where a Uyghur worker said, “We were all former ‘re-education camp’ detainees and were threatened with further detention if they disobeyed the government’s work assignments. The police regularly search our dormitories and check our phones for any religious content. If a Quran is found, the owner will be sent back to the ‘re-education camp’ for 3-5 years.”

The United Nations estimates that more than a million Muslim Uyghurs have been detained in the camps of Xinjiang over the years for indoctrination and to induct them into the CCP style of living and all this in the name of providing vocational training and removing terrorism.

The United Nations estimates that more than a million Muslim Uyghurs have been detained in the camps of Xinjiang over the years for indoctrination and to induct them into the CCP style of living and all this in the name of providing vocational training and removing terrorism.
this is insane.
It also shows the hypocrisy very well. Even though U.S.A. seems like they support Uyghurs against China, big companies like Apple are using them.

The repeated government orders to “break their lineage, break their roots, break their connections, and break their origins”; “round up everyone who should be rounded up”; and systematically prevent Uighur births demonstrate a clear intent to eradicate the Uighur people as a whole.
[...] In our interconnected world, we are not only bystanders if we fail to recognize the genocide as we see it. We are complicit.

The video preceding the article text is of particular interest. Andrew Marr interviews Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese ambassador. Marr first discusses the footage of blindfolded, Uyghurs being loaded into trains. Marr asks: 'what is happening in this footage, ambassador?', but Xiaoming evades the question, and questions the source of the footage. The closest he gets to answering the question is by suggesting that what is being seen is simply the 'transfer of prisoners'. Marr continues by asking why Uyghur population growth has dropped by 84% between 2015 and 2018. Xiaoming answer by saying that the figures are incorrect, and that the Uyghur population in fact doubled to 11 million over the past 40 years (research into official Chinese demographic data over the cited 40-year time period does not corroborate this, according to the BBC). Marr inquires about the programmes of forced sterilisation of women; Xiaoming says that the government enforces no such sterilisation policy, but that individual cases may occur. Marr tells the ambassador that when people see footage, of kneeling, shaved, blinfolded people, being lead to waiting trains by presumably armed soldiers, to be detained in so-called 're-education camps', they will recall the Jewish persecution and Holocaust of 1930s and '40s Germany. Xiaoming responds: 'there are no such [Nazi] concentration camps in Xianjiang'. Xiaoming then takes an alternative line, and resorts to rationalizing; he tells Marr that we are in a modern information age, and that the media makes all sorts of fake accusations against China. Marr then reads out the UN convention that provides a list of criteria for classifying genocide (killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about a group's destruction, sterilisation, forcibly transferring children). Xiaoming responds: 'this is not true, the facts just show the opposite. People in Xianjiang enjoy a happy life ... China, of course, is strongly opposed to any torture, any persecution and discrimation of any ethnic group of people ... The policy of the Chinese government: every ethnic group in China is treated equal. That's the success story of Chinese national policy'. Here the video ends.

Of course the Chinese would have the said the same thing ('China, of course, is strongly opposed to any torture, any persecution') about the Tiananmen massacre in 1989.

The BBC article also mentions Dominic Raab's condemnation of Chinese actions (Raab is the UK foreign secretary), growing calls to impose sanctions on China, and a recent petition that calls for government action over Uyghur persecution that has amassed 100,000 signatures (it must now be discussed in Parliament). Raab says that before the UK can impose sanctions on China, it must 'build up an evidence case', and the BBC's foreign diplomatic correspondent is quoted as suggesting that a trade embargo against China 'could prove costly in a post-Covid economic downturn'. China warns of retaliation if the UK targets Chinese officials: 'if the UK goes that far to impose sanctions on any individuals in China, China will certainly make a resolute response to it'. This warning of retaliation is also made in the light of the UK's recent offer of residency to up to 3 million Hong Kong residents. It is evident that the UK government's response to Uyghur persecution will be tempered by a desire to avoid direct conflict, and to avoid any sanction that would directly harm the UK's economic and political interests. However, if the UK (a fairly globally influential state) does decide to take a hard line against China's dirty doings in Xianjiang, it would mean that other countries could be inclined to follow, and the violations of the Uyghurs' human rights could be revealed and punished. However, all remains to be seen.

Here is the change.org petition, 'Stand Up For The Uyghur Muslims In China'. So far it has 1,000,000 signatures. We must do what we can to help the Uyghurs, even if it is as simple as signing this petition.
