Would a ban on all public religious representations and displays ease religious hatreds and violence?

Imagine if a religious person suggested making atheism illegal. Yet atheists want to criminalize religion.
Umm.. you actually just proposed that exact thing in another thread...

For what it’s worth I don’t think religions should be banned at all, it’s a key part of people’s view of themselves and of the world. It’s intricate to people’s character, even non belief is intricate to that persons character. Also it wouldn’t accomplish anything - people who are so inclined would just find something else to use to justify their hate.

For atheist it’s better cuz for some of them to believe in God they have to see with their own eyes.

NK’s god is Kim Jong Un and we can SEE HIM!!! Isn’t it great y’all?
I don't think it's about seeing or not seeing God.
I think it has something to do with resentment toward religions and politics.
Some people believe that a secular state is inherently more good and benevolent than a country with a state religion.

It's understandable and I think a state and a religion should stay separated forever because flawed institutions will remain flawed even if you try to 'polish' it with religion.

For most of mankinds history atheism has been illegal, so far religion is illegal in exactly nil countries so please stop complaining about atheists wanting ( but never getting ) a religion free country.
I was laughing stock at school daily, remember making big rounds around my town on sunday, looking for a chance to sneak in to the church unnoticed, because if they did monday at school is going to be "fun" again...My sister couldn't find a job for quite a while. Because nobody likes religious freaks . Once atheism becomes a norm, it becomes incredibly tough for religious people. While in religious countries there are plenty of atheists and nobody cares, nobody disturbs them. I guess only when you give people power they show their true faces...To this day i have tough time admitting im a believer publicly...Fear simply doesn't go away...

Indeed it's true, agnosticism and atheism isn't always proof of tolerance and open mindness. It's quite the opposite sometimes.

Just like you I was scared to say i'm a believer in public until I realized that I wasn't willing to change who I am just because I don't believe the universe was the work of chance.

There are places in this country where the opposite is true though. Every group is guilty of it on some level... it’s actually quite easily explained by group psychology, though I know most of you write off psychology as nonsense.

You're right, sadly some people can be great as individuals but terrible in a group.
And this starts as early as schools where someone is mocked because he's different (jews, black ect.)

That's why I'm careful with crowds.

Das right, every group is guilty of something, there’s always a rotten one to spoil it. It’s always something a lot of people often forget including me, to be honest.

People like to bring up past to guilt trip others, and ignore the present. While it is great to remember and learn from the past but what much more important is to focus on the present and future.

@Vytas im saddened by what happened to you. I do understand how it feels. I hope next time, if you are in a situation where u are asked about your religion or in a situation where it is against your beliefs, you can get the courage to say you are a believer of Christ. Because we are not ashamed of Jesus Christ.

*slips you a note “Galatians 1:10 and Deuteronomy 31:6”*

It's not tough, hard or anything in between. Simply if you are used to be ashamed of something, can't get ride of it in one day...Like a habit, you can overcome it, but it's there... Childhood experiences are very strong, as a kid i fell down from a horse once, quite painfully and for the rest of my life im afraid of horses lol, even ponies, can't even get close to them without being terrified...

In North Korea they kill you if you have any religion other than belief in the state.
Okay I am countered, there is one county where the state imposes belief in their God-king ! ( religion)
Oh wait, that means there is a belief system imposed that is not atheism..

Nobody disturbs atheists? No you just get your head chopped off in the Middle East.

Otherwise I truly am sorry you went through that, as a kid you should be treated with respect no matter where you come from.

You can get your head chopped in there for being a believer too, depends from region and religion...:)
It's fine, i wouldn't trade places with anyone. Still soviet union was quite the country...

Man is naturally evil by the ancestry of Adam. He is born religious, but even if he were not religious, he would be persecuted by other men who just have that common nature...Cain is the beginning of persecution on other people, apart from religion. He is the one who started thievery and bartering when the world was in a state of helping each other.

I am not saying atheistic states would be better in all cases, Soviet Union is a good example and the China of Mao Zedong too. I have problems with all repressive political systems and what I want is probably a utopia.

The secular state is as close as I can get to perfection with my beliefs about freedom, I just think a neutral public life might be beneficial in reducing societal tensions.

I will never ban anyone from practicing religion behind closed doors.

It's all wrapped in good intentions, but to put it bluntly you want to silence religious people...

Nope. I just would prefer no displays of religion in the public space like people wearing crosses and headscarves etc because it causes tensions. That is different from silencing them.

Churches are fine with me, as are mosques and any kind of temple. But the state should be neutral and so should public domain be.

I would like to know why you believe it may cause tensions.
For example, would you say that we should not display the LGBT flag in public as well because it could cause tensions ?
