Sin, a false hope to escape their Sin or the Sin committed against them, usually a continual cycle of Sin and Guilt and a desperation to escape it so they do turn to drugs, which creates more Sin and Guilt and on and on...
Some drug taking [medications not included] certainly is sinful, but so are the many sins leading up to the taking of the chemical substance the first time.

If from boredom - has already decided not to use time constructively.
If to impress others/ peer pressure - fear people more than God.
If pleasure - loves self more than God/ neighbour.

Great description of an alcoholic here. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+23:29-35&version=KJV

After reading through the comments it seems as if some are trying to answer the OP's question by putting it in a simple box. What they are missing is the fact that many addicts are masking pain, even if for a binge. They are putting their problems away for a bit with an escape. Some lose themselves and give completely up while others hold onto reality and return to their pain for a time only to go back to the default when triggered.

Crack is a drug for those who have less money, while powder is th choice for those well off. They are sometime functioning addicts or other times just flush with cash allowing them to do what they want.

More often than not people end up using drugs as a crutch. It may start out as partying or joy but turns into an escape with crack in general. It is of course, a false sense of escape and actually a prison of desire and what they think is a need.

Sadly once a person gets to a cerain point with crack, they are almost certainly gone. They know this, give in and just ride the pain out until something bad happens or they die. It is odd that the girl almost glamorized the drug as oppose to another in the OP. It shows that she is on the road to acceptance which will lead to further brain regression and a loss of her looks sooner than it would naturally happen.

Thankfully, some people come out of the fog, but only through an awakening and some willingness to embrace the pain. You have to understand there will be pain before things get better in the way of facing ones demons and reality.
