People who engage in such atrocious acts are hypocrites at best for calling themselves Muslim. Similarly to pedophiles who call themselves priests but go around molesting children.

What a ridiculous thread. How can you associate FGM with Islam ? It predates Islam and is a cultural practice specific to Africa. However, a few other countries have adopted this banal tradition.
It stems from the patriarchal society of rural villagers where they wanted to be promised a virgin. They sew the woman's vagina to prevent her from engaging in pre marital sex, they leave a tiny opening for menstrual blood, some people go as far as sewing the lips of the clitirous, but this is not common as the woman can bleed to death.
It's barbaric practice and unfortunately my East African heritage is infamous for doing this. Please don't associate this with religion, there's nothing in Islam which encourages or condones this, it's a form of oppression and should be stopped.

It is a cultural mainly African thing and it is practiced by people of other faiths in Africa as well....such as the animists (in sub-Saharan Africa)
It has been discredited in Islamic scholarship.
It is predates Islam as a practice.
Nomads did this because they would go out in the wild and would want to make sure their blood lines were safe.
Islamic scholarship has come down against it.
It is not practiced by the majority of Muslims.
People need to differentiate between Islam the religion and the cultural practices of a segment of Muslims.

The issue is when a person or a group of people who are 'Muslim-looking' commit heinous crimes such as FGM, people equate it to Islam.
Islam is not a race, it's not a culture, it's a faith. The easier we can accept this, the easier ignorant threads such as this can be debunked.

I would imagine it remains to this day because many people are able to see how it would be beneficial to the religion because the religion has an emphasis on chastity without any clear indication that this is not required to initiate a chaste perspective. Therefore, they integrate it into the religion that doesn't specify that they can't do this.
It is another one of those things that the Islamic religious leaders are responsible for redirecting; however, it remains neglected and so it is remains in practice. These should be simple things for the leadership to correct. You just make a central rule showing how the Quran supports the decision. Done, no more discussion.

It remains a practice in rural areas especially.....but it is an unusual practice for most Muslims since it is unIslamic and forbidden in religious jurisprudence to mutilate a body part.....

FGM isn't discussed in Islam its not an Islamic issue, it's not in the Quran or the Hadith. Why would a Muslim leader need to comment on this when it's not specific to Islam?
There are Muslim leaders in countries where this horrendous practice occurs, they do speak against it but that won't deter a community from practicing something they've done for centuries.
No one integrates FGM into Islam...they just butcher these girls for their sordid cultural beliefs. There's a narrative of seeing their husbands as God-like, not in a worship sense but in the sense that they'll do anything to make him happy. Plus it's a pride thing for the men, they want to know they took her virginity, it's sick and many of these girls are encouraged or even forced to marry men who already have wives.
