Unsaved people cannot understand the Bible. Thus, it doesn't matter if you read it five thousand times-you still wouldn't understand.

1 Corinthians 2:14

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
Some who wrote particular books of the Bible were "spiritual elitists" and used that argument to help reinforce a cult mentality on their followers. Most Christians are very scared to look elsewhere for spiritual truth because of that. Their minds have been tied.

You just can't rely solely on the Bible to understand salvation, but reading it helps. You can find just as much wisdom elsewhere if you are "discerned" enough to recognize it.

2 Timothy 3:16

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
King James Version (KJV)

2 Peter 1:21

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
King James Version (KJV)
