What’s with all of the occult horror films?

Is it just “what’s trendy”? I’ve seen two recently. The Wretched and Hereditary. I figured y’all would have some insight.

I haven't watched those two films but I'd probably laugh at them anyway like I did all through "The Exorcist"..:)

I've seen a plethora of occult horror films in the 80's when I was a kid. To name a few, Angel Heart, Witches of Eastwick, The Seventh Sign, Amityville, Witchboard, Puppet Master.. It def seems trendy when you look at Netflix nowadays, but it's hard to know if this is "on course" with the way it's always been and maybe we're now seeing the pattern with new eyes?

The Exorcist wasn't aired here on Brit mainstream TV for many years, but when it was finally aired I sat down to watch it, expecting to be traumatised by all the hype I'd read about it.
But I began spluttering my popcorn and rofling at the sheer comedy of it, and when the little girls head turned through 360 degrees I nearly split my sides laughing..:)

One of the few intelligent scenes was when the priest tried to exorcise the demon and it began speaking in his dead mother's voice through the girl's mouth to try to make him feel guilty about not visiting his dying mum in hospital.
That was a good example of what demons DO, they read our minds looking for little things like that which they can use against us.
However, the clever priest knows it's a trick and says to it "You're not my mother"..:)

One of the best horror films I've seen is 'The Stone Tape'; where a high-tech electronics group working in an old country house discover that the place has a ghost, so they devote all their efforts into triggering it and capturing it.
In this clip, the ghost puts in its first appearance-

And here's the full film on youtube-

I was adult when I first saw the Exorcist and thought it was real funny.
Incidentally my adult sister has never dared watch it because she's very highly strung haha..:)

Here's a bit from 'The Monster Club' in two 10-minute parts.
Stuart Whitman plays a film director who searches for a spooky village that he can use as a location for one of his forthcoming films, what could possibly go wrong?

I saw hereditary and midsommar, both by ari aster. The guy once said he was sick and wanted everyone to be sick just like him, also some of the occult elements of both movies are partly true.

This is either what happens when someone dabbles in the occult and isn't prepared or either it is some elite crap.

But yeah, you're right. There is defenetively a trend there.

ok, i'm realizing it's hard to watch something that would have been scarier when you were a kid, as an adult. I totally get the humor in the Exorcist, looking at it objectively now lol

I find ALL horror movies disturbing, to view.
I don't know how people can stomach watching them? Talk about desensitization. Gross. Then again doctors and medical professionals see some incredibly vile sh** and then go on to have lunch....go figure!
I have a few friends who share the same feeling about watching horror. There's something about the emotional rollercoaster, discovering the dark unknown, and mostly, the feeling of safety (i.e., viewing from the comfort of my living room) that has always drawn me toward them. I'm more of a psychological thriller fan and can't stand gore movies (which seem to be filled with cheap reactionary tactics than clever, in my opinion).

Nowadays I like to watch what these movies are revealing to us.. I'll rewatch old stuff just to try and catch symbolism, including occult stuff because it seems closer to reality than most horror movies.

sorry if this derailed the post, I tried to bring it back to the occult tho! :D

The son of a friend came to see me today. Since the guy went to college he was exposed to all kind of spiritual crap you can imagine. Karl Marx, Nietzsche and I suspect that Aleister Crowley and the Thelema too. He became so "open minded" (desconstruído is the term I want to use) that he came to think that things like incest and walking around naked are normal and showering and brushing your teeth aren't.

His parents found him in his house covered in trash, even the cockroaches were dead in that rat pit. Of course this is a kind of depression and he came see me to buy the medicine, but he went full nihilistic and became drunk with poison. The depression is the results of all that he put on his mind.

What I believe, tough, is that what happened was some Hereditary-like sh_t. The guy became a vessel to all kinds of terrible toughts and it pushed his body to its limits, now that he has no strenght left he is just an empty shell devoid of everything. He couldn't even talk anymore, he just babbles some disconected words.

Well, I hope that he finds order in his life again.

Update! The guy made it! He is functional again, altough he has some minor episodes and some erratic behaviors sometimes he pretty much left behind all the trash he was into, is doing great at the law school and he is preparing to the law exam thing you must do before you can work or whatever

I was gonna bring this one up, VC has already done a great article on it. Honestly, the movie disturbed me 4 a while. I really believe it was showing us what it takes to reach star status in the industry (read about Nicole Kidman & her father)

But about the horror genre, I literally brought up this very topic to my friends a cpl weeks ago. We cldnt decide on a "scary" movie because 1) they're all torture porn movies (like Saw, Hostile, etc...) 2) or they all have some kind demon/satan story.... for a long time I would only watch Japanese or other Asian horror because they were all mostly old school "scary ghost stories" or stories based on curses that once believed to be true in their cultures. But recently I've found like a 1/2 dozen Asian horror movies that dealt with straight up demon possessions like the Exorcist. All based in Christian faith, all had a Catholic Priest etc. The only 1 that I can think of right now was called "Metamorphosis" & it was straight up devil/occult crap
