I don't think it's really a bad thing, more a natural response to a dumbed down society. Today is the American independence day and people will be celebrating what? Freedoms they think they have? Freedoms they used to have?
I'm not sure if it counts as meditation, but I do enjoy the quiet, the birds and other wildlife. Even seeing a black racer (snake) in the yard will lift my spirits.

Oh it sure does! This is the true beauty of it all imo. The silence, calmness, and serenity of nature which is the language of God Almighty.
And yeah you're right concerning the celebration of freedom or independence and whatnot. Everything's God-Dependent. Hope they realize it.
