US lifts ban on refugees from 11 countries

WASHINGTON: The United States announced on Monday (Jan 29) it was lifting its ban on refugees from 11 "high-risk" countries, but said those seeking to enter the US would come under much tougher scrutiny than in the past.

Applicants from 11 countries, unnamed but understood to include 10 Muslim-majority nations plus North Korea, will face tougher "risk-based" assessments to be accepted.

"It's critically important that we know who is entering the United States," said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

"These additional security measures will make it harder for bad actors to exploit our refugee programme, and they will ensure we take a more risk-based approach to protecting the homeland."

The 11 countries, hit with a ban in October in the Trump administration's revised refugee policy, have not been identified officially.

But refugee groups say they comprise Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Speaking anonymously, a senior administration official told journalists that the policy of enhanced security assessments for the 11 countries was not designed to target Muslims.

"Our admissions have nothing to do with religion," the official said, adding that there is "nothing especially novel" about tougher screening for countries deemed to have a higher level of risk.

Donald Trump has pursued a much tougher stance on immigrants and refugees from all countries since becoming president one year ago.

Annual refugee admissions have been slashed by more than half to a maximum of 45,000 in fiscal 2018, which ends on Sep 31.

Does anyone find these statements unreasonable?

I find it more unreasonable that the US engages in illegal wars and drugs with my tax dollars while I make 40k a year and can't benefit from Medicaid and have to work a second job just to pay a doctor to even see me.

I think hours critically important that we acknowledge that the US citizen only funds an illegal government that doesn't have their best interest at heart.

Unfortunately we can't enact security measures to keep these bad actors from being puppets culling the herd.

It's all bullshit.

North Korea needs a cruise ship. Just sail around the world to facilitate Moranbong concerts. Somehow they need to get a public relations campaign going. Like those "Yes, visit Texas"-style ads lol

You can always move to a country that lets just anyone in. Oh wait, no one wants to go to those countries because they suck.

There's a reason why people want to come to America. Protecting what makes America an attractive country to live in just makes sense.

1) america already has very stringent screening guidelines for refugees, it isnt easy to get in here and hasnt been for quite some time

2) refugees have not been the ones committing terrorism here, and the countries the terrorists did come from - when they werent citizens born here - are not included in these measures

3) we played a key role in the societal instability (to put it nicely) which created these refugees

4) basically he presented a solution to a problem that didnt actually exist and phrased it in a way so that anyone objecting or even just trying to point that out looks unamerican - giving people like thunderian an easy opening to tell us to move then.

and to thunderian - if we are so great why arent more people from "quality countries" trying to come here? and why are the descendants of white immigrants expatriating themselves in record numbers?

That's why he uses the word Homeland to inspire feelings of nationalistic pride and loyalty to quell anyone attempting to use critical thought to figure out that this is a bandaid on a self inflicted wound caused by a government that makes its citizens bleed and then tells them it isn't blood and it does not hurt.
