The reason why the early books of the Bible are attacked is not simply from intellectual objectivity but from the desires of the researchers for them not to be true. If they were, scripture would paint the picture of an unbearable reality to them, and perhaps one they might devoutly wish to escape from.
I would encourage anybody to consider the information @rainerann and @Vytas present, and perhaps not discount the material being unearthed by patternsofevidence.com and others to counter the "lack of evidence" claims so frequently made by certain sectors of the established academic community.
Since truth has nothing to fear from examination, go where it takes you, but make sure you dig in the right spot ;-)
