Welcome to the Seinen AND Shounen Discussion Thread!

Many anime and manga seem to have much far-eastern lore, occultic signs and religious origins which we may not be aware about.

This thread's topic is all about RELIGIOUS symbolism, new age, eastern and western philosophies, Gnosticism, occult etc and some hidden symbology and lore. Whether you watched only one show or are a big fan, if you know any such examples, please participate and share! This thread is all about exploring religious symbolism in shounen and seinen manga and shows.

Please post any anime and manga related stuff you have seen, from the basic signs to more complex theories. Manga fans are especially welcome of course! Please do not go off topic from JAPANESE media, thank you.

{DISCLAIMER: The point of this thread is to learn about these unfamiliar far-eastern themes in our manga/anime and to explore religious and spiritual theories in our favourite shows, such as Tokyo Ghoul or Neon Genesis Evangelion. All the topics and theories discussed here is speculation and should not be taken as facts. If you do not enjoy exploring these religious themes in anime and manga, then this thread is probably not for you. Please read extended disclaimer below for further clarification. }

Extended Disclaimer

NOTE: I did NOT make this thread to tell people to stop watching anime or reading manga, no! Apologies if I wasn't clear. The point of this thread is self-awareness of these symbols, and also to explore some lore and themes in some shows by making interesting theories based on what the creator's religious, occultic and spiritual motivations were - and how it influences the plot and main character(s)

Another reason why I made this thread is so we can dig deeper into the lore of some manga and anime [seinen and shounen] and see how these elements we see in the occult, Western or Japanese religions connects with the story line of the main characters. For example, Neon Genesis Evangelion has a lot of lore one could say is from Kabbalah, but for the average viewer, what is kabbalah? How do we know the motivations of the main character if we are still confused about the mechanics of the world? Also there was a lot of Christian influence as well. Thus, it is a good idea to understand these religious themes first. Also in Naruto there are a lot of far-eastern philosophies such as chakra usage, ying yang etc....and names of Japanese 'gods' we are unaware of and their stories. . .how does this relate to our main character's powers? How does a western viewer understand the origins? What japanese religious themes perhaps inspired the show and how does it differ from our own?

Also once we know and realise some of the origins of these themes, we will not consume those philosophies and beliefs into our hearts. That's the real takeaway from here: consume the media but don't let it consume you. We simply want to learn what makes our favourite anime and manga characters tick and about the setting and rules about the worlds of these stories.

EDIT: The edits I did (and will continue to do) was to refine the topic further and clarify the topic at hand to dispel any confusion.

Interesting about HxH, I watched HxH in my teenage days. I'm pretty sure there is gay/pedo (but not really) undertone in it LOL.

I don't watch Jojo but it is interesting.

The character called Boingo with 911 on his shirt, he died on a pole with Q11 (Q in japanese is KYU means 9)
The Q had an eye (of horus) in it and notice the laughing plane.

911 on shirt, checking his watch says it's 10:30
10:28 am – The World Trade Center’s North Tower collapses, 102 minutes after being struck by Flight 11.

Reminds me when Bob Dylan says he didn't know how he got to write his songs, it was like it's magically written.

Naruto:
In Naruto small plan that refers to the three columns Kabbalist and Alchemical: The column to the left of the moon (Sasuke) right in the Kabbalah. On the right, the red sun (Naruto) on the left in Kabbalah. The eye is in the middle (down in the alchemy) represented by Kaguya represents the light:

666 Satan:
The brother of the one who created Naruto to create the manga 666 Satan: The hero is dressed as the column (in the Alchemical sense), blue and red eyes:

Evangelion:
At the beginning and the end of the first generic is the tree of Kabbalah, the tree of the Kabbalah is upside down. At the end of Evangelion, is the end of the world after a total chaos. The earth is now an egg (symbol of renewal and nothingness, for them light is born of nothingness).

Full Metal Alchimist:
In the end, his body is separated from his brother's soul and behind him the door whose drawing also represents the tree of the Kabbalah.

I think its not discussed but it doesn't need to be except in rare cases. Pointing out "Satanic symbols" in things like eva or full metal where the symbols are OBVIOUSLY part of the lore as the story revolves around alchemy, makes nothing but conspiracy theorists look like idiots.

That is like crying that a movie about cult has "occult" symbols in it or that a movie about satan has satan in it. Just because something has that stuff in a story doesn't mean its made by some higher up old non-aging dudes to ruin the masses or something. It just means that the author did his research prior to making his stuff.
Honestly the amount of times people bitch about death note (the book) saying stuff that is obviously the point of the damn show is annoying.

I miss the days when anime, comic and video games weren't mainstream. The popular they get, the more cancer they attract.

Edit: Nevermind, just scrolled up. Already a video posted of someone crying wolf about things that are supposed to be the point of the damn show and calling it illuminati lmao.

I think the point of this thread is more about showing how pervasive the occult concepts are in anime and manga whether they be as a part of a scene or the whole concept or theme of the content.Because, the more content produced on this topic, the more acceptable it becomes to the public.
At the end of the day,all these concepts are made more mainstream only to instill them more deeply in the public consciousness.

Deathnote and other shows, what they are essentially showing is the dark winning over light(literally with the names of characters) and showing the futility of struggle. So,kind of making people think that there is no use to try to make anything better because it is anyway destined to end in suffering.Nihilism,if you may.
Also,I'm sure many people get intrigued with these occult concepts after they watch these shows and try to find out more.Aren't they getting introduced to these concepts then?
Just like how harry potter glamourised witchcraft.
The video literally talks about the name light being an homage to Satan being the light bringer. Light is pretty much lucifer in the show if thats what we go with. But he loses at the end and like a little bitch anyway. And its not L who makes him lose either so the "el" thing doesn't work either.

Occult symbols are not bad on their own. Symbols don't have power neither do concepts. The same symbols are a part of different religions and faiths and aren't necessarily satanic. I feel like this whole thing does absolutely nothing more than spread paranoia and divert attention from important issues.

Why are you on this website then? If you don't like it leave.
Ohh someone got hurt lol.

I'm here because once in a while there are important and interesting issues brought up that aren't limited to triangles being in cartoons. My comment wasn't directed at you in the first place since the video you posted was interesting, the replies were not. But I see now, you are exactly the type of person I'd expect to bring this up.

In that exact same fashion I could say "If you don't like the shows, don't watch them" but I'd expect the average user here to be over the mental age of 10.

At the end of the day,all these concepts are made more mainstream only to instill them more deeply in the public consciousness.
Most of the psychological thrillers with amazing themes were made prior to 2010. Eva and ghost in the shell went even further back in the 70-90s. So if they are using anime to spread this sort of "thoughts" to public, they are clearly doing a shit job considering the western remakes were absolute trash and did nothing more than making people hate them.

More anime currently being made are trash. Idols, singing, moe and all other kind of stuff that attract and pander to the audience of NEETS or self-proclaimed otakus. And these shows neither have themes and nor good stories. The community itself is dying and so are the anime studios.
Once in a while something good comes up but those either hit a mass scale audience and die with romance stories like "Your name" or the story about motherhood and general relationships like "maquia".

This is an entertainment forum where most of the posts are about occultic symbolism, like the BTS discussion thread. If you are denying the power of symbols in a forum which completely revolves around this, even in anime and manga (which is not unpopular the subreddit for anime is at one million subscribed people), then you are completely out of touch with common issues and are deluding yourself into believing these societies and symbols do not mean anything, which couldn't be further from the truth. Moreover I am the one who started this post so of course I would naturally intervene in a post which is denying that there are some occultic symbols in anime and manga, you are talking as though anime and manga is a small unheard of cult-like following, total nonsense. I wouldn't have started this post if I believed no occult influences had existed. What's wrong with exploring media which we generally consume when we notice these symbols? To halt such ideas is to censor the truth and general human curiousity that one many have.

I would rather if you have nothing to contribute you simply read the post since you clearly have little idea with what you are talking about, especially since you said the anime and manga community is dying. The subreddit for both r/manga and r/anime have both hit a million views and anime is becoming more mainstream than ever, like with some rappers referencing such shows or yearly growing convention sizes. Netflix are now investing more than ever into creating anime and animation, the market is now worldwide thanks to platforms like funimation and it is now no longer shunned to be considered an anime fan.

So anime and manga effectively effects a lot of people. If that is the case then, like music affects a lot of people, then fans of the topic would undoubtedly come across symbols and signs in some shows which are generally either more cryptic in nature, or which are lighthearted but share the same symbols with signs seen in other entertainment industries, which would sometimes appear strange once since it has nothing to do with the story line in some cases, but seeing it over and over again it makes many questions the reasons for shows and manga repeatedly using the same symbols, signs and lore, which may be unrelated to japanese culture.

This thread is designed to uncover those mysteries and also explore the many hidden layers we may not see or understand in such shows and storywriting, and can also help to understand anime better which is hard to see from the surface (e.g. Neon Genesis Evangelion). All discussion is welcome related to the occult provided it stays on topic of 'anime and manga'

Tl;dr your point = Anime/Manga community isn't dying.

Reddit subscribers doesn't prove anything. The studios are dying, many studios are going bankrupt. The western audience actually doesn't matter when it comes to decisions made about anime.
The quality is going downhill and quantity is being raised which is resulting in bunch of copypasted stuff being released. Funimation and crunchyroll HARDLY contribute to the anime industry at all, buying dvd is what does which almost nobody out of japan seems to care about.
There have been videos made talking about this issue since 2016 when the fall originally started.

Literally every anime that will be discussed in this thread will be from before 2010s maybe with the exception of few gen urobuchi stuff because he is pretty much the stephen king of that side. Every occult thing pointed out will be from psycho thrillers where they are part of the point. Anything ongoing that is mentioned will be stuff that has been ongoing for a long long time like hxh and jojo. This is why i said that if its to spread occultic influence, they are literally doing an awful job with the new stuff that is coming out.

It is not about the symbols its about the intentions. When music videos show satanic stuff, admist all the blood and effects, its glamorized. We see the songs that really push forward and glamorizing drugs. However this isn't the case here since such stuff, stories and characters are always painted in a bad light.

Uncover whatever mysteries you want out of fictional animated shows but there is a line between fiction and reality. The author is not his work. He is not the characters he writes about. Unless you can make that distinction, the thread can only go so far from triangles in cartoons.
And don't compare BTS thread to this. If you think that, that thread is limited to finding occult symbols in music videos, you've clearly lost the point of their discussions. Those are actual men that are being exploited from a young age in the name of fame and money. Those are actual lives at stake and not an author's imagination.
I'm not demeaning this thread and neither did i say that about your post until you came up with the most boring, most useless line of all as a reply to something that wasn't even addressing you. But dumb conspiracies make the real ones sound equally stupid.

Here's a video which explains your point about 'dying' anime:

Classic anime is dying. Actual anime is not, it's getting more popular.

Also you are extremely rude at this point and not worth addressing. You are gaslighting me and making it seem like I am the one creating problems when you literally came to a thread you don't believe nor want to discuss:

I see why you edited your comment now.

The topic will remain as anime occult whether you choose to derail the discussion or not.

I edited my comment to put two posts as one instead of editing anything that was in it. Who is the one gaslighting?
And yes I've already said that anime industry is dying and is now focusing on quantity instead of quality which is why we are seeing more and more copy pasted moe stuff instead of actually good written stuff. Again who is the one gaslighting? And you seriously went ahead and posted a gigguk video lmao.

No one is gaslighting here, you said that people aren't discussing this and i mentioned why and then i talked about the other comments. Get your head out of your ass instead of calling people rude because they don't agree with you. The only reason you're replying to me now is because i called your earlier immature "dont like, dont stay" comment and you're triggered.

Nice.
I'll stop now since I'm probably talking to someone way too young to handle the internet.

Ok so about Black Butler.

Now Black Butler is about a boy called Ciel and he made a contract with a demon called Sebastian after his parents were killed in a fire. Now in the latest chapters (this is SPOILERS) something happened which sounds extremely similar to something which happens in real life satanic sacrifice circles and it was a little sickening. . .

**BIG SPOILERS FOR BLACK BUTLER**

So it turns out (many chapters later) Ciel is not actually called Ciel....he stole the name...from his twin brother. And the fire that happened in his house was a cover also to kidnap both of them.

His twin brother was sacrificed by this secret society to summon a demon and they raped both Ciel and this brother....remember they are both only 13....some sick stuff I swear. The manga itself is very suggestive in nature the manga isn't nsfw and it's mainstream but some things are...anyways The fake Ciel's brother was sacrifced on an altar and that's how Sebastian the demon was able to come into the human world.

Ciel makes a deal with Sebastian to kill all the people in the room and to find out who killed his parents...

The whole chapters is disgusting and mirrors everything the youtube channel a c_all for an_up rising has been talking about.

Prepare your eyes folks this is gonna get ugly: (It is sfw but trigger warning anyways...)

Yuck that “the devil only craves for innocent and young souls” this is so true, esp if know about Satanist ritual called “Demon Revel”, they are torturing young children for the demons. I don’t suggest u to research about this it is extremely dark and sickening. It’s demonic realm.

The butterflies are MKooltra monarch programming and why in the world he brought up Holy Father, last time I checked the bible He already sacrificed His own Son to us and
"See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." Matthew‬ ‭18:10‬‬

Gosh I hate when people twisting and perverting Christianity.

These animes old and new are always and will always be popular in many generations to come and they’re still carrying a lot of influence to young audiences.

That's really not an uncommon feeling for creators in general. If you write organically, what you create tends to take on a life of it's own. Characters do things you might not expect, events happen you don't plan, etc.

I'll give on example, look at Usagi from sailor moon doing this satanic pose everytime....

Devil horns she does in every 'magical girl' sequence.
The "devil horns" is actually the sign language for "I love you".

The "devil horns" is actually the sign language for "I love you".
The "I love you" hand signal used in sign language was created by Helen Keller. Keller was into Theosophy (founded by Satanist Blavatsky), the satanic group that Krishnamurti rejected, and it actually means "I love you Satan". It is just another form of the "Devil Horns" hand sign. It was popularized by Anton LaVey (founder of the Church of Satan) and passed on to the masses through rock musicians who were into Satanism. The crowds picked it up without knowing what it meant.

Horned hand or The Mano Cornuto, this gesture is the satanic salute, a sign of recognition between and allegiance of members of satanism or other unholy groups.

edit: more about Helen Keller
"...Since I was 16 years old, I have been a strong believer in the doctrines of Emanuel Swedenborg. Why should I change my faith...I have a profound respect for the teachings of Baha Ullah... I am a Swedenborgian.." Helen Keller

Swedenborg (1688-1772) declared that the "Second coming of Christ" was the "revelations" he received to give to the world. He professed to converse with spirits from Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Venus and the Moon, etc. He denied salvation through faith alone.

"His hair stood upright and he foamed a little at the mouth... He said he was the messiah. He then undressed himself, rolled in a very deep mud..." (John Wesley on Swedenborg)

"Of all mystics, Swedenborg has certainly influenced 'Theosophy' the most. His clairvoyant powers, however, were very remarkable.

Clairvoyance: The faculty of seeing with the inner eye or spiritual sight.. that faculty which was so remarkably exercised by Jacob Boehme and Swedenborg." (H.P. Blavatsky, Theosophical Glossary; editor of Lucifer Magazine)

I updated my thread since a lot of people were upset but at the same time I wasn't clear on the topic, which I apologise. I thought a little longer about what I should do with this thread and which direction I should take it, and I came to a few conclusions and updated the thread. I am NOT asking those to stop watching anime or manga, I'm simply asking people to be aware of the religious symbols that exist and their possible origins, and why it was put into the manga in the first place.

Manga and anime has MANY themes. In this thread I want to explore the religious ones and the symbols we see a lot in our shows. You do not have to stop consuming the manga or anime, just we are here to make theories about it.

I started the thread with some random topics to get the ball rolling but it would be interesting if we turned to the direction of HOW these symbols effect the main characters' motivations and worlds as well, and their powers, and what philophies they have. Also learning about Japanese religions would be interesting...I heard once an interesting theory how the Japanese hiragana alphabet has a connection to hebrew for example.

Of course you can discuss the usual theories like the black butler one I did, but keep to the theme of religious and occultic influence in shounen and seinen manga, and also Japanese religion/culture and media itself. I think Tokyo Ghoul is a pretty good place to start, there was a truck load of stuff in that manga and many tumblrs with religious theories on that. . .but any manga/anime/media will do.

EDIT: Personally Fullmetal Alchemist for me had a lot of interesting religious symbols. Like I still don't get the whole gate of truth thing and the alchemy tree. That would be interesting to know about.
