Jesus says that Salvation is of the Jew. But the Jew comes out of the Gentile. Adam, Seth and Enoch (who was taken by the lord Gen. 5:24) were all Gentiles. Noah was a Gentile who God had him build the Ark. Abraham (Abram) was a Gentile from the land of Canaan (Gen. 11:31). In whom as a Gentile was the father of FAITH (Rom. 3:28-4:1-8). But it is out of the promise to Abraham by God that the world would be blessed through him, in whom came the nation Israel. In whom the Kingdom was prepared for Israel FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD (Matt. 25:34) "This verse is specifically speaking of Israel," not the Church.

For, in the mind and plan of God, The CHURCH is older than the calling out of Israel (Eph. 1:3-5) ……….Who has chosen us in Him BEFORE the foundation of the world...…….. God dealt with man as one race until He called out Abraham, of which Abraham's great, great Grandson, Joseph comes the 12 tribes of Israel.

They were Gentiles, They were nations of people that God found , looking for mercy before Israel was even called out. Even all the Muslim nations are Gentile.

Question: "What is a Gentile?"

Answer:
The word

Gentile

is an English translation of the Hebrew word

goyim

(“people, nations”) and the Greek word

ethne

(“nations, people groups, people”). The Latin Vulgate translated these words as

gentilis

, and this word was then carried over into English as “Gentile.” The term refers to a person who is not a Jew.

From the Jewish perspective, Gentiles were often seen as pagans who did not know the true God. During Jesus’ time, many Jews took such pride in their cultural and religious heritage that they considered Gentiles “unclean,” calling them “dogs” and “the uncircumcision.” Gentiles and the half-Gentile
Samaritans

were viewed as enemies to be shunned (see
John 4:9

;
18:28

; and
Acts 10:28

).

So when was it first used?
Hi elsbet, Here is some information you can research and decide for yourself.
  1. When were the Israelites first called Jews - Answers.com

    www.answers.com/Q/When_were_the_Israelites_first_called_Jews
Isaac's son Jacob was blessed by God, who renamed him, calling him Israel (Genesis ch.35), which is why Jews have also been called Israelites. Jacob had 12 sons, who fathered the 12 Israelite tribes. The Israelites worshiped One God.
  2. When did the Hebrews or Israelites become known as Jews ...

    georgesjournal.net/2013/01/04/when-did-the-hebrews-or...
Isaac was Abraham’s son and Jacob his grandson. Jacob’s name was changed to Israel (Gen. 32:28; 46:1). Since this time Israel’s descendants were known as the children of Israel or Israel or Israelites. Israel’s family moved to Egypt where his son Joseph was second in command to the Pharaoh.

The word “Jew” ultimately comes from Judah, an ancient kingdom centered in Jerusalem, in the 2nd century BCE. But how did the kingdom's Hebrew name, Yehudah (Judah in English), pronounced ye-hu-DAH, beget “Jew”?

The earliest reference to the Kingdom of Judah is in a clay tablet found in Nimrud, the capital of the mighty Assyrian Empire (and now a heap of ruins in northern Iraq after ISIS obliterated the ancient city). The tablet, Kalhu Palace Summary Inscription 7, dating from approximately 733 BCE, describes the military exploits of King Tiglath-Pileser III of Assyria. On this list of the kings and kingdoms he vanquished is: “Jehoahaz of the land Judah”.

The modern context of gentile and the way the Hebrews used it was of foreigners to Israel. Do you really think Israelites in the Bible would refer to their own patriarchs as gentiles?

Hi Koncrete, Nevertheless, they were Gentiles as taught to me by the Messianic Jew. Abrahams father from Ur worshiped idols. Jacobs wife Sarah worshiped idols, They were gentiles. Gen. 31:17-19.

That makes much more sense.

Abrahams father from Ur worshiped idols. Jacobs wife Sarah worshiped idols, They were gentiles. Gen. 31:17-19.
But the worship of idols is not what makes one a gentile either. But if you have a point to make by calling Abraham, Noah, Adam etc.. gentiles (even though the prophets in the bible would never call them that) I'll leave you to your thread..

I thought the definition of being a Jew only made sense if there was a Gentile and vice versa. How could the pre-Flood Patriarchs to Isaac be gentiles if there wasn't a Jew in existence?
Unless jew is stretched to mean "worshipper of the true God" rather than Jacob's progeny.

If idol worship makes one a gentile, where does that leave King Solomon and King Ahab?Or is it just a blood thing?

So when was it [Jew] first used?
Around 1775.

The King James Authorized translation of the New Testament into English was first published in 1611. The word "Jew" did not appear in it. "Judean" (יְהוּדִ֔י) was changed to "Jew" beginning in the later 18th century versions of the KJV.

Today ignorant people think "Jew" means 'a Judean' like Jesus. It does not. Today that word refers only to a person who follows Talmudic Judiaism, which did not even exist until the Talmud was first codified around 400 A.D.

The word "jew" wasn't in the 1611 bible. The word "iewe" was though. Different lettering etc.
