What direction does your balcony face? How many hours of sunlight? What latitude? Are you looking for edible or ornamental? Not trying to be intrusive, I just like growing things.

I forgot that not everyone lives in above 0 degrees Celcius temperatures.

I think that herbs prefer lots of sunlight just not the below zero temperatures. You need good potting mix and you need to get the watering just right for the particular plant too.

For me basil grows extremely well.

It faces outward towards sunlight but is blocked by the guy above me, his apartment has the same balcony so my current plants get sunlight for a few hours a day.

Latitude idk it's just a block of 8 floor apartments,m

You're not being intrusive don't worry, what do you like to grow? i wish I had a private garden but it's communal and kids usually play football there so I'm reluctant to plant there. The balcony is limited, narrow and doesn't get the greatest amount of sunlight but summer finishes in September so I'm trying to squeeze in some planting

I think edible and ornaments, I have some generic plants there now and they've survived over summer but they'll definitely die when winter comes in

So, south, but still a little shady?
I meant as in degrees north or south.
I like finding out what I can grow well.
With that I'd try herbs or leafy greens. Radishes are fun too. About 28 days to harvest and can be used as a diversion plant to help protect others.

I'm in the south east of the UK, yeah quite shady so looking for plants that can thrive in that climate

Thanks I'll give those suggestions a go soon

I would also go for flowers which seem to grow well in the wild in the UK. There is no point in growing tropical/semitropical plants if you don't have a greenhouse.
E.g. here in central Queensland roses don't grow well because it's way too humid.

My radishes have grown surprisingly well on my balcony but I get a lot of morning sun.

With trellises, snow or sugar snap pea may do well heading into your cool season.

instead of struggling to find what will and wont work, see what the local gardeners and farmers are growing in your area. its probably a waste of time trying to find what is best in your locale based on trial and error. microgreens work everywhere. perhaps pak choi in your area-- its fast to harvest as well.
    do you have roof access?
id get more pots and bigger pots. you have a bit of room to start composting some of your vegetable wastes. are you making sprouts inside your house? thats pretty easy and very nutritious.
you might want to try growing your own mushrooms. you dont need any sunlight for that, of course.

I started growing finally, got a huge pot with basil, chives and parsley, just planted chillis, two kinds of tomatoes and sweet peppers last week, so far the tomatoes are beginning to sprout. Id recommend getting yourself some biobizz lite mix for starting plants, its got enough nutrients but not that much that it will kill your seedlings and it doesnt go all compact so its good for root growth 50 litre bag from amazon for about £17 free prime delivery!! def best soil and its organic! :)

I got a mini pop up 4 tier greenhouse from amazon too was about £23 inc delivery and its a good sturdy wee thing so you can easily move it in or outdoors depending on the weather so if its colder just bring them inside keep them in the kitchen or somewhere! Its also perfectly legal to have a grow light for indoor veg growing!!

last night I had a dream, dont remember it all and only kind of recalled it randomly,, dunno what reminded me but from what I remember it was very interesting.

It was just about my life my reality only it wasn't this exact life and I cant remember it really but I just know it was like just random day to day stuff and then all of a sudden I was pulled out of my reality and found out it wasnt my real reality, dont remember the real reality either just that I realized that the first fake reality I was in was so real that I almost couldnt believe it was possible that this was happening, it was a bit like the matrix in a way but just the whole concept of all of a sudden being taken from your fake reality that you had no idea was fake and now this is the real reality, it was pretty damn cool and interesting I wish I could do back to it and remember it all and find out more. It was one of the most awesome dreams Ive ever had really just because of the reality theme, have had load of dreams of the end of the world and having to leave this planet and aliens and stuff lol blamed watching far too much Ancient Aleins themed stuff at that time but Ive not really watched anything like that recently that I recall but my memory is ridiculous these days, the current housing situation is definitely affecting my cognitive functions although today is a lot better thanks to half a xanax, best sleep Ive had in weeks tbh lol and one of the best dreams I ever had lol
