But let them be morally purer than all the peoples in the world, and certainly the Russians, and yet I have just read in the March issue of the Vestnik Evropy the news that the Jews in America and the Southern States have already pounced en masse on the multi-million mass of liberated Negroes and have already taken them into their own hands, in their own way, by their well-known and eternal "gold trade" and by taking advantage of the inexperience and vices of the exploited tribe. Imagine, when I read this, I immediately remembered that five years ago I had thought of the same thing, namely, that the Negroes were now freed from their slaveholders, and they could not survive, because the Jews, of whom there are so many in the world, would pounce on this fresh victim.

I thought about it, and, I assure you, several times later during this period the thought occurred to me: "Why don't you hear anything about the Jews there, that they don't write in the newspapers, because these blacks are a treasure to the Jews, will they really let them through?" And about ten days ago I read in Novoye Vremya [New Time] (No 371) a most characteristic correspondence from Kovno: "They say that the Jews there attacked the local Lithuanian population to such an extent that they almost killed everyone with vodka, and only the priests saved the poor drunk, threatening them with the torments of hell and organizing temperance societies among them."

The enlightened correspondent, it is true, blushes very much for his population, which still believes in the priests and in the torments of hell, but he also reports that enlightened local economists have risen after the priests, have begun to establish village banks, precisely to save the people from the Jewish pawnbroker, and rural markets, so that the "poor working masses" can receive basic necessities at the present price, and not according to the one appointed by the Jew.

If you begin to write the history of this universal tribe, you can at once find a hundred thousand facts of the same and even greater importance, so that one or two facts will add nothing special to it, but what is curious is that as soon as you, whether in an argument or just in a moment of your own reflection, need information about a Jew and his deeds, Do not go to libraries to read, do not rummage through old books or your own old marks, do not work, do not search, do not strain, and without leaving your seat, without even getting up from your chair, only stretch out your hand to the first newspaper lying next to you and search on the second or third page: you will certainly find something about the Jews, And invariably what interests you is certainly the most characteristic and invariably the same thing — that is, all the same feats!

Why, you must admit it, it means something, it points to something, it reveals something to you, even though you are a complete ignoramus in the forty-century history of this tribe. Of course, I will be told that everyone is obsessed with hatred, and therefore everyone lies. Of course, it is very possible that every single one lies, but in this case another question immediately arises: if every single one is lying and is overwhelmed by such hatred, then where does this hatred come from, for this universal hatred means something, "after all, the word "all" means something!", as Belinsky once exclaimed.


"Free choice of residence!" But is the Russian "native" person really so completely free to choose his place of residence? Do not the old and undesirable restrictions on the complete freedom of choice of residence for the Russian commoner, to which the government has long drawn attention, still continue to this day, remaining from serfdom times?

As for the Jews, it is evident that their rights to choose their place of residence have been greatly extended in the last twenty years. At least, they appeared in Russia in places where they had not been seen before. But Jews still complain of hatred and oppression. Even if I am not firm in my knowledge of Jewish life, I already know one thing for sure and will argue with everyone, namely, that there is no prejudiced, a priori, stupid, religious hatred of the Jew in our common people, such as: "Judas, they say, sold Christ."

If you hear this from children or from drunks, then all our people look at the Jew, I repeat, without any prejudiced hatred. I've seen it for fifty years. I even happened to live with the people, in the same barracks, to sleep on the same bunks. There were a few Jews there, and no one despised them, no one expelled them, no one persecuted them. When they prayed (and the Jews pray with a shout, wearing a special dress), no one found it strange, did not interfere with them and did not laugh at them, which, by the way, should be expected from such a rude, according to your ideas, people as the Russians; on the contrary, looking at them, they said: "This is their faith, this is how they pray," and passed by with calmness and almost approval.

And so, it was these Jews who shunned the Russians in many respects, did not want to eat with them, looked down on them (and where is this? in prison!) and generally expressed disgust and squeamishness towards the Russians, towards the "indigenous" people. It is the same in soldiers' barracks, and everywhere throughout Russia: visit and ask whether a Jew is offended in the barracks as a Jew, as a Yid, for his faith, for his customs. They are not insulted anywhere and this is how it is with the whole people.

On the contrary, I assure you that both in the barracks and elsewhere the Russian commoner sees and understands too much (and the Jews themselves do not conceal it) that the Jew does not want to eat with him, disdains him, avoids him and protects himself from him as much as he can, and well, instead of being offended by this, the Russian commoner calmly and clearly says: "It is his faith that is it is he who does not eat and shuns because of his faith" (that is, not because he is evil), and, recognizing this supreme reason, from the bottom of his heart he excuses the Jew.


And yet sometimes a fantasy came into my head: what if it were not for the three million Jews in Russia, but Russians; And there would be 80 million Jews – well, what would the Russians turn into and how would they treat them? Would they have allowed them to be equal to them in rights? Would they be allowed to pray among them freely? Wouldn't they have been turned directly into slaves? What's worse, wouldn't they have skinned them completely? Would they not have beaten them to ashes, to the point of final extermination, as they did with foreign peoples in the old days, in their ancient history?

No, I assure you that in the Russian people there is no prejudiced hatred of the Jew, but there is, perhaps, a lack of sympathy for him, especially in some places, and even, perhaps, very strong. Oh, it is impossible without this, it exists, but it does not come from the fact that he is a Jew, not from tribal hatred, not from some religious hatred, but from other reasons, for which it is no longer the indigenous people who are to blame, but the Jew himself."
