On 6th March it was announced that dozens of new Dead Sea Scroll fragments thought to have been hidden during a Jewish revolt against Rome 1,900 years ago have been found in a cave.

The fragments include lines of Greek text from the biblical books of Zechariah and Nahum and were radiocarbon dated to the 2nd century AD, experts confirmed.

I wondered what the passages were, and what their message was...

Zechariah 8:16-17

16 These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:

17 And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord.

This is a reminder of God’s standards. The world at large seems to be increasingly ignoring them.

Nahum 1:5–6

"The mountains quake because of Him, And the hills melt. The earth heaves before Him, The world and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before His wrath? Who can resist His fury? His anger pours out like fire, and rocks are shattered because of Him."

This is a reference to God’s coming judgement, the Tribulation. The warning has gone out. There is till time to change course and believe the Gospel. Some will hopefully listen, others will harden their hearts.

A line from the talk below sums up the moment we are in.

The sun shines on a marshmallow and butter. The marshmallow turns as hard as stone in the sunshine, the butter melts. Same sun, different outcome.
