“Wellness” Barbie to Teach Children Mindfulness Meditation

LTRP Note: Lighthouse Trails editors have never been fans of “Barbie” dolls, but, no doubt, you will find the dolls in many Christian and non-Christian homes. But regardless of how one feels about Barbie dolls, the makers of Barbie have taken the doll into the New Age with mindfulness meditation as you can read below in this news clip. We have posted this for informational and research purposes and not as an endorsement of either the source or the content.
“Wellness Barbie Is About to Teach Kids the Fun of Self-Care & Meditation”
By Sabrina Rojas Weiss

You can never accuse Barbie of being behind on the zeitgeist. Her latest evolution isn’t a new career move or style choice, but rather, a line of dolls who are taking a minute to step away from it all and practice self-care. I’ve got to say, Wellness Barbie could go a long way to making kids and their parents a little bit happier.
“The Barbie brand is at its best when it connects to culture, and we saw this trend happening and wanted to make sure girls learned how to take care of themselves and bring it to them in a fun way through play,” Mattel designer Chandra Hicks said. Click hereto continue reading.

So instead of make up and fancy cars children will be learning a technique to stay calm and centered. Indeed if you go back to the practise of meditation as it is in Buddhism rather than the secularized modern form, a part of a life in which material possessions are of no importance and happiness sought only within.

Anyway I don't really see how sitting cross-legged, closing one's eyes and observing one's own thoughts can really be a bad thing unless you have a lot of deeply buried neurotic/psychotic complexes which you've been keeping at bay with ceaseless activity and distraction, and which are only waiting for an opportunity to surface. Not going to make any comment on the kind of belief systems which might lead to the development of such complexes.

It doesn’t seem all that rosy here...

The dark side of meditation and mindfulness: Treatment can trigger mania, depression and psychosis, new book claims
  • Theory is that techniques help relieve stress and live for the moment
  • But 60% of us have apparently suffered at least one negative side effect
  • Experts: Shortage of rigorous statistical studies into the negative effects of meditation is a 'scandal'

Ah yes, The Daily Mail, what a reliable source of unbiased and balanced information... Not the organ and mouthpiece of any hysterical notion which might pop into people's heads...

Anyway my previous post already covered what you are saying.

Who doesn’t have problems though that could be uncovered...those problems are worse than just uncovering the problems you have...
Forming false memories
Discarding positive thoughts
Avoiding difficult thinking activities
Adverse Side effects...
These included reports of depersonalization(feeling detached from one’s mental processes or body), psychosis (loss of contact with reality) with delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech, feelings of anxiety, an increased risk of seizures, loss of appetite, and insomnia.
The authors especially cautioned vulnerable people such as those with PTSD to be particularly careful when undertaking mindfulness practice. Their main point was that participants should be screened carefully for their suitability before undertaking this practice, and its teachers should be properly trained and supervised.

As followers of Jesus shouldn't we be looking to uncover our problems so that God can deal with them? Oh that's right your brand of Christianiy teaches you to just stick your head in the sand because once we have accepted Jesus, we aren't responsible for our actions or thoughts anymore, right?

An explanation of it:

God at Eventide - daily readings

Union with God. - November 17

True
religion is that which binds the soul to God, and supplicatory prayer binds the soul less than any other form of approach.

It is necessary, how necessary, but how often it can fail to bind truly. Meditation and Communion are of infinitely more value.

Meditation is man's line thrown out. It links the soul to God. Communion is God's line thrown out. It draws and unites the soul to Him.

Meditation that is based on eastern and pagan religions is very dangerous. That kind of meditation can lead people to get into altered states of consciousness. They are not fully in control of all their faculties and that’s when demons and evil influences can really penetrate into their thinking.

There is meditation in the Bible and its promoted. Its very different to mystical, eastern, pagan meditation where the mind has to be emptied. God said to Joshua, "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success” (Joshua 1:8). Biblical meditation is filling the mind with the Word of God. It helps us to better understand godly matters and put them into practice.

Scripture challenges us to meditate on God’s law (Psalm 1:2, 119:97), precepts (Psalm 119:15, 78), decrees (Psalm 119:23, 48), statutes (Psalm 119:99), unfailing love (Psalm 48:9), works and mighty deeds (Psalms 77:12, 143:5, 145:5), wonders (Psalm 119:27) and promises.

6 Reasons to Reject Eastern Meditation and Yoga

1.
Eastern meditation empties the mind. Biblical meditation fills the mind and spirit with God’s Word. Emptying our mind is actually a very dangerous thing because it gives the enemy room to fill it with his deception.

2. Eastern meditation focuses on self: centring yourself, your inner self, self actualization, your breathing, physical feelings, and emotions. The enemy will do anything to get us to stop focusing on Christ. Furthermore, his ultimate deception is pride or elevation of self. Biblical meditation takes our focus off of ourselves and places our focus on Jesus Christ.

3. Eastern meditation seeks to relieve stress. The problem with our culture isn’t stress. Stress is only a symptom of a deeper problem: pride. Worry, fear, perfectionism…these all have their root in pride and all result in stress. But God wants us to daily walk in faith that brings us peace no matter our circumstance. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). Christians absolutely shouldn’t turn to anything other than Jesus Christ for the peace that will help to ease whatever it is that has brought stress on in their lives!

4. Eastern meditation focuses on man being in control. Eastern meditation practices rely on self as the agent to bring peace, tranquillity, and oneness with whatever deity – the original lie: “You can become like God” (Genesis 3:5). Biblical meditation reminds us God is Almighty and when He is in control we can be at complete peace knowing that His purposes will prevail. Eastern meditation dethrones God and puts fallen man in His place.

5. Eastern meditation is only escapism. By seeking higher levels of consciousness or altered states of consciousness you can escape your stress and enter new realms of oneness with deity. But the fact remains that once we have returned to our usual state of consciousness whatever it was that brought on the stress is still there. Biblical meditation doesn’t give us an escape from reality, it gives us supernatural strength through the Holy Spirit to walk through the “fire and flood” at peace knowing that God is in control of every situation. We don’t need to escape our troubles, by faith we walk through them , counting it all joy, “knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:3).

6. Eastern meditation manipulates circumstances to bring peace. By using atmosphere, objects, silence, breathing techniques and more, people are able to enter a meditative state. It’s a manipulation of circumstances and atmosphere. However, the child of God can meditate on God’s Word whenever, wherever, no matter the situation or circumstance because we have direct access to the throne of God. Indeed, we are the temple of God and His Holy Spirit dwells within us. We never need to manipulate any situation to experience peace; we simply recall the precious promises of the Word of God and place our faith and trust in Him!

Just curious, what kind of sorcery/magick (black?) do you perform? Have you ever sacrifice any animal to whoever you meditated on?

Your writing just shows your ignorance of the traditions you are attacking. For one meditation isn't about "emptying the mind", it's about observing oneself and not being caught up in psychological chaos. Of course there are many different subjects of contemplation, such as the impermanence of life, compassion and kindness, philosophical subjects - none of which are really about "emptying the mind" except in the sense that practicing concentration naturally frees us from distraction.

As for this whole notion you have that it is all about "self", that's completely incorrect. In Buddhism "self" is not even considered a reality, Buddhist practice is about wisdom and compassion not about incarnating "higher self". In Hinduism there is the Atman which you could roughly translate as "soul", but that isn't really self either.

Meditation is opening up, digging deep into oneself to find true peace rather than the illusion of happiness brought about by material life and self-delusion.

Different types of meditation from different pagan religions achieve different things. Some definitely are about empting the mind such as in Buddhism. Maybe the kind of meditation you do is not about emptying the mind but that's not true of others is it? So its your ignorance showing here I'm afraid.

I disagree. All meditation that is not about God of the Bible is about self. If we don't meditate on the Word of God and fill out minds with His Word then its all about self whether the pagan religions says it is or not. As you said, "Meditation is opening up, digging deep into oneself to find true peace rather than the illusion of happiness brought about by material life and self-delusion." This is about self right here. Can you not see your contradiction?

I'm quite familiar with a number of "pagan" traditions, and the only place I can remember seeing the advice to "empty the mind" is in various new age practices not derived from any legitimate Eastern or Western tradition. A cursory google search for "does meditation mean emptying the mind?" turns up this and this, the latter being from a pretty reputable site about Buddhism.

Perhaps you should pay attention to what @Phithx is saying and go beyond your fundamentalist fear-dogma.
