Thanks for bringing up Fukushima. It's an important topic that honestly I hadn't thought about in a while. Yeah from other articles it sounds like the government and TEPCO are attempting to calm the public's fears while scientists and others are still very concerned. One of the reactors is still leaking into to ocean.
Interesting comparing this to Chernobyl. That was a full meltdown but they're closer in levels of radiation than people probably realize. Chernobyl's exclusion zone extended 18 miles while Fukushima's is 12. It's scary because the effects of exposure take time to calculate. Greenpeace estimated the fatalities in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus could be 93,000 with cancer rates as high as 270,000 for people that would not otherwise have contracted the disease.
