A twisted sadist who brutally tortured and scalped the mother of his newborn child before draining her body of blood has been caged for life.
Multi-millionaire real estate heir and graphic novelist Blake Leibel killed fiancée Iana Kasian in a prolonged knife attack before she died at his flat in West Hollywood, California.
She had given birth to a daughter, Diana, just three weeks earlier.
Parts of the 30-year-old victim's face, including her right ear, were torn off, her blood had been drained from her body and her scalp had been removed, an autopsy revealed.
She was alive for the "better part of the mutilation and mayhem" during a "prolonged attack", a court heard, and took some time to die.
Superior Court Judge Mark Wyndham said the killer had shown "inconceivable cruelty" as he caged him for life without parole.
The Ukrainian woman's mutilated and naked body was covered with a red Mickey Mouse blanket - which had been used earlier in the newborn's nursery - when police entered the couple's blood-spattered bedroom.
Prosecutors told a court that the brutal killing mirrored the plot of a graphic novel co-written by Leibel, and was like something from a horror film.
Officers were forced to break into his home on May 26, 2016 after Ms Kasian's worried mum, Olga, hadn't heard from her in two days.
Leibel, the 37-year-old heir to his Canadian father's property empire, was arrested after barricading himself inside the home.
He was convicted last Wednesday of first-degree murder, torture and aggravated mayhem after a jury deliberated for just 90 minutes.
He will now spend life in prison without parole after prosecutors opted not to seek the death penalty.
His trial in a Los Angeles courtroom heard pieces of the victim's flesh were found in the bedroom and it appeared she had been washed thoroughly.
Part of her scalp and her ear were found in a rubbish bin outside the building.
A coroner ruled her cause of death was exsanguination, the act of draining a person of blood.
Deputy District Attorney Tannaz Mokayef had told jurors in her opening statement: "This case reads like a movie script."
She said Ms Kasian's had suffered during a "prolonged attack", and was "alive for the better part of the mutilation and mayhem".
The prosecutor showed jurors a gory illustration of a woman in Leibel's book and told them to compare it to the crime scene where Ms Kasian was found, saying it was almost identical.
Prosecutors argued the book had acted as a blueprint for the murder.
Syndrome, published in 2010, features a drawing of a decapitated woman lying naked on a blood-soaked bed.
Another illustration shows two people hung upside down, drained of blood.
The book features a mad doctor who tries to rid the brain of evil by using a condemned serial killer as his human guinea pig.
It includes an illustration of blood dripping from a hand alongside the caption: "In the end, we all become monsters."
During the trial, the jury was shown graphic photos showing the blood-spattered bedroom where Ms Kasian was tortured and murdered.
Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman had told the jury: "This was depravity. Ms Kasian died a slow and painful death.
"He threw away pieces of his fiancée like she was trash. The mother of his newborn baby.
"Her daughter will never know her, and that's because of the unconscionable acts you heard about during this trial."
Ms Kasian's mother, who gave evidence during the trial, broke down in tears as Leibel was convicted.
The killer, who denied the charges, showed no emotion as the verdicts were returned last week.
His wealthy father Lorne was a sailor for Canada at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal before he made a fortune building homes in the Toronto area in the 1980s and 1990s.
His late mother Eleanor's family had founded a plastics company in Toronto.
Toronto-born Leibel moved to California and was supported by his parents, who gave him a home and a monthly allowance of about $18,000 (£13,500).
The author, who had two children with his ex-wife, inherited the majority of his mother's estate after his mum died in 2011.
According to his IMDb profile, he was a creative consultant and director on the 2008 animated version of Spaceballs.
He also wrote and director a small film called Bald in 2008, and directed a short called Soulmates in 2013.
