Do you keep the law? Why The Law Cant Save and Why It Only Brings Wrath and Condemnation
(I wrote the following in response to someone else, but I will post this here, because I feel its relevant)
Why does the law bring wrath and condemnation?
...whats critical to understand is that ALL sin is essentially chalked up as a failure to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. It is a failure to keep the most important commandment. Sin is transgression from the law and when we sin we break the law and as result we are acctually breaking the the entirety of the law, every jot and tittle(James 2:10). If you remain consistent with this notion and follow the logic of scripture then this is indeed the ultimate conclusion. Even according to the ten commandments if you commit any sin and sin in your heart/attitude you are failing to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. If you act in pride you are failing to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and in result you break the entire law by breaking the most important commandment. If you dont believe God will provide for you and waver in unbelief/doubt you are sinning against God and failing to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength for whatever is not of faith is sin(Romans 14:23). Zechariah became mute until John the Baptist was born, because he didnt believe in the word brought to him by an angel of the lord. That is how great of a sin unbelief is. The Isrselites couldn't even enter into the promised land, because of their unbelief! How great an offense! How sinful of a sin before God! Yet, how many of us constantly doubt the lord and sin against him?
Also, if you know to do right and don't do it, it is sin(James 4:17) and once again you have failed to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. That means if I feel God calls me to pray and dont do it then it is sin, because I failed to love God with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength and didnt do what I knew to be right. How many times in just ONE day do we fail to love God with all our hearts and sin against him in our very attitudes and omissions? Yes, even omission and the act of omission is sin and a failure to love God with all heart, mind, soul, and strength. To those who claim to keep the law - What is keeping the Sabbath if we break the entire law all over again everyday through other sins? What is the sabbath if you fail to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength by being found guilty of other sins? The law is so holy, the commandments are so holy and they show no partiality. Can you honestly say you even keep the most important commandment everyday? Can you honestly say you love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength at ALL times and in ALL moments throughout the day?
I would like to speak from personal experience. Do you know how many times God has put something in my heart to do, but I did not do it? I was either too tired, too lazy, too afraid, or too stubborn. This is certainly not ok by any means! I am just pointing out that to him who knows to do right, but doesnt do it, it is sin. Do you know how many times I have questioned Gods love and goodness in my heart? How many times I have wavered in faithlesness in unbelief? I sinned against God and failed to love him with all my heart and in this one sin of the attitude of my heart I broke the entire law all over again. Whatever is NOT of faith IS SIN! Remember how Israel was wiped out when they took census of how many soldiers they had before battle? They failed to trust in God for the victory and put misplaced trust in themselves.
Do we not realize how holy and impartial the law and commandments are? Do we not realize how utterly sinful we are in light of them apart from the perfect righteousness of Christ? Do we not realize how utterly condemned we are by the law? Do we not realize how holy and perfect God is?!
Now DONT GET ME WRONG. This post is not to strengthen the hand of the backslider, the wayward, or the wicked that they remain comfortable in their sin and not turn from their ways that grieve the lord, their ways that tempt his rod of correction that brings chastisement. If we are resisting the holy spirit then it is coming, be assured! This post isnt to suggest that we cant overcome our sinful passions by the blood of Christ and by the power of the holy ghost that we may grow in Christ. Its not to insunuate that since we all have sin that there is no point in even trying to pursue holiness and putting to death the deeds of the body. The contrary is true! We are more than conquerers through Christ.
This post is for those who are under the presumption that they acctually keep the law and try to impose the law on others. It is merely to bring to remembrance the sheer holiness and perfection of God and his law, his holy standard. It is to point out that by the deeds and righteousness of the law that NOBODY is justified, because NOBODY keeps or has kept the law except Christ. The law demands PERFECT obediance without fail and if you fail in one jot or area of the law then you are guilty of breaking the ENTIRE law. Good intentions arent enough. Trying isnt enough. There is no in between. You either keep all of it perfectly and without fail or you keep absolutely NONE of it. These are the holy and immutable demands of the law! Imagine how holy God is! Even the early jewish disciples at the council of Jerusalem recognized how holy and demanding the law was as well as their utter failure to keep it.
Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? Acts 15:50
The point of this post is to point out that the law only works and brings wrath, because under the perfect standard and light of the law there is only imputed sin, that ALL are shutup before God under sin. We can only build up our criminal record of sin under the law..... BUT where there is no law there is NO transgression. This is why Christ redeemed us from the law, because there is no fellowship or access to God where trespasses are being counted against us. This is the jurisdiction of the law and if we try and rebuild what was destroyed in Christ we turn ourselves into transgressors all over again(Galatians 2:18)! So if you claim to keep the law and commandments put yourself to the test. You will find out that if you are truthful with yourself that the law cannot and will not ever paint you in a favorable light with God, because the law demands you keep all of it(Galatians 5:3). "Cursed is everyone who does not continue ALL things having been written in the book of the Law(Galatians 3:10)."
One sin was enough to turn Adam and Eve into rebels and bring complete and utter condemnation on themselves and the human race. It didn't matter how much they had obeyed previously. All it took was one sin and their righteousness and former obediance turned into unrighteousness and condemnation. One sin according to the standard of the law brings the same condemnation. If you fail in one area of the law you break ALL of it and become a a rebel, a lawbreaker. The entire purpose of the law was to show us our complete and utter need for the perfect righteousness of Christ. It is the only righteousness that is acceptable before God. You cant add to or take away from a perfect righteousness. If we are truly in Christ and been adopted as a son or daughter and been born again by the spirit of God then our trespasses are no loner counted against us. He has given us his perfect righteousness and we are justified before God apart from the works of the law. You can only ever be found guilty as a SINNER according to the law!
In Christ we are loosed from the law and joined unto Christ to serve in the newness of spirit as ministers of the new covenant. Not of the letter, but of the spirit. We should not be pointing backwards to the law, because the law only works wrath by taking our sins into account. The power of sin is the law(1 Corinthians 15:56).
In Christ we are free, but we should examine ourselves to see whether or not we are truly in the faith and if Jesus Christ is truly in us(2 Corinthians 13:5). If we are born again and his spirit is in us then we are not under the law. We are called to freedom to serve in the newness and power(liberation) of the spirit! We are called to freedom.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Galatians 5:13
Galatians 5:16-26
King James Version
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
