I thought they recently were trying to make churches government entities too? Didn’t the pope ok that?

Days after signing a landmark agreement with the government of China on the appointment of bishops, Pope Francis has written a letter reassuring the Chinese Catholic community of his support. The agreement, which was announced on Saturday, had sparked confusion and criticism of Francis, that he was selling out to the Chinese government.

Under the agreement the Vatican will recognize seven bishops appointed by the government, and lift a previous order excommunicating them from the church. The agreement was reached after many years of negotiation between the Vatican and China. The government has long insisted it must appoint bishops within the country, and refused to recognize papal authority to do so.

China watches anyone who doesn’t worship government above all..

The United States led more than 30 countries in condemning what it called China’s “horrific campaign of repression” against Muslims in Xinjiang at an event on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly that was denounced by China.

Its crazy cuz they probably dont even have much churches to begin with wtf
From what I read in Brother Yun's Heavenly Man, the visible church (not the underground true church) in China is state or province run, Communistic, and yes, controlled by the government. It's not real church community but more religion.

What is that Brother Yuns heavenly man?
It's a biographical book by Brother Yun who was repeatedly arrested and persecuted for his faith in Christ. He preached the gospel and helped lead many to Christ. He had to leave China eventually since it was hard on his wife and children to have a husband and father continually in prison. He ministered to men who spit on him and worse in prison. I'd like to meet him someday. His story is incredible and inspiring like Corrie ten Boom's and others who have endured persecution, revilement, abuse but who come out of all that with all joy, endurance, forgiveness and love. He loved those who persecuted him and almost enjoyed being in prison just to reach those who no one else could or would love. Well, not enjoyed in a pleasurable sense but because the Holy Spirit was strong in him he could put himself aside even in pain and starvation and sickness and love some unlovely people.
