Okay so... I don't totally belong here because although I know bts' names, basic facts about them, and like a few songs, I know very very little about their ships. So this might be my only comment, because I don't want to derail this thread, but I do want to talk about the kpop ship I always thought was "real".

I've been a kpop fan since 2012 and my favorite group is shinee. My biases are jonghyun and kibum. And the ship I always thought--and still do believe that "something happened between them" is jongkey.

Most people believe that their relationship fits the first option you talked about, they believe that from 2008-2012 they were more real. I shipped them from 2012-2017 so obviously I don't believe that, but I do believe that back then their moments were more childlike, and instinctual.

During their predebut days, jonghyun and kibum were friends even when they didn't know they were going to debut together. Fans of smtown trainees said they were always together, and that jonghyun was basically kibum's shadow.

So regarding bts pairings, I think it's definitely smart to ship the ones who hung out a lot together during predebut. Because as cutthroat as the industry is, we all need someone to lean on.

In 2013/2014/2015 there were less obvious jongkey moments, but there were way more hidden moments, which is why I continued to ship them, because they kind of shifted into the second option you talked about, they are older, and they seemed to have more of a choice.

The last really... powerful jongkey moment, was when jonghyun had given kibum a ring for his birthday in 2017. Of course they weren't married and of course they couldn't get married, not in korea at least, but... I still feel so bittersweet about it. It felt almost like a promise of something more, something /real/ and it really made me think "wow this five years of shipping was finally worth it". The end of 2017 was a tragedy, and I dont want to make my comment too sad, but I felt so bad for kibum. And I felt just as bad for jinki, minho, taemin, his family, and his friends but... the way i felt for kibum just felt... different. I dont know how to explain it. And he had to mourn in front of everyone and fans were making it worse by writing "jongkey" on every single post he made.

Later in 2018, kibum made a solo album/debut that, in some ways, reminds me a lot of jonghyun's music. He has a few songs that I would call "couple songs", where it seems like he thought about jonghyun's songs and "answered" them in his own songs. In 2019, his repackage for his album has some aesthetics in it that look like old pictures jonghyun took over the years.

So, yeah. When it comes to real person shipping, I never want to annoy the people I'm shipping so I am very selective about this stuff. Jongkey is the only relationship I have shipped, without them actually saying "we're dating". And for a lot of these ships we may never get that, but I think sometimes you just *know*.

Also! To be completely honest I think their relationship was like an "open secret" amongst other idols, because when an idol would mention kibum, they'd talk about jonghyun too and vice versa.
Even though I dont know the group or the members beyond their names, i have seen jongkey posted about a lot. They seemed to be compared to the V and Jk ship by the bts shippers.

That's really interesting! How would you say taekook's relationship is like? Did they seem closer when the group first started, or do they seem closer now? Or has it been pretty consistent? I always like when people say "so and so" reminds them of jongkey so I can check them out more.

They were definitely closer right when they debuted and were well promoted in the company, now they seemed not as close and apparently according to analysis videos and some content I watch... you can see where the company will cut out their scenes or edit it in a way to make it seem like Tae isn't even in the room.

The part that makes me sceptical is that Tae himself has distanced himself from being filmed all the time, and he is constantly saying he wants to do things as a group where there are no cameras around.

So while he doesn't get a lot of screen time in their movies or behind the sceeen clips lately, I always wonder if it's because the company is actually taking that into consideration or if it's the company not wanting to film him out of a certain spite.

That makes me sad, hopefully it is more his choice than the company's spite. But I did have some feelings in the past that jonghyun was slowly being "phased out" of the group and replaced by taemin, but it didn't seem to matter because jonghyun still sung a lot in group songs and still had a strong solo career and solo activities... hm. I don't know. I know I can't really compare taehyung and jonghyun but... I wouldn't be surprised if he (tae) *was* being punished in some way, for something to do with his "friendship"/relationship with jungkook. Because that's how it felt for jonghyun sometimes. However, I can't really compare kibum and jungkook at all so.

The ships are fake. Fan service is a huge part of kpop, it's what attracts many fans. You get to see these intimate moments between members and it makes you feel closer to them. Also ships are popular because it's better to ship the members together than with an opposite sex. The fans won't get jealous. The company will see what ships are most popular and the group members will play up that ship more with fanservice.

Hi there, so you are shawol at the back time then? High five. Me too at that time, I don't know about shipping so I never thought so hard about. But, I feel like happy when I watched Onkey interaction. of course it's because of their title as Appa and Umma of SHINee. Just for fun when I watched them.

But now I more interested to BTS as 2nd BB which I like, but want to reduce some of my fangirling little by little. Talk about BTS Shipping, I like more interested to shipping is about from 1 year ago. I started to like BTS at late 2017. Last year, I watched Taekook but I don't get interested. Then, I met Taejin analyse and started to think "let me watch ya" and now I deep into Taejin buuuuut the funny thing is I don't want to take taejin as a real anymore and of course all of them, I mean I don't want to pairing them again. Just like I lost my interest. But still sometime my taejin is blooming again.

Because of what?

I started to think that Jinkook more real than taejin or maybe Taejin is over than let jinkook play the role. Wkwk. I don't know just my opinion. Lately I watched BV4 and feel like "ok, jinkook was there" even Taejin was in the same car but I thought it was only fanserving. Bighit feel sorry, maybe, taejinist like me before didn't get much service from taejin. I'm always denying about real taejin because I don't want to break my heart someday. I feel Tae was alone even he was the most person that suit to pair with others, but I feel like it's just fan serving. The reason is almost in BV4, he was a person who gets interaction with his phone the most, even there is namjoon was chosen to interacted with phone the most. But, I think tae do the same. I mean he find his circle. I don't know, I'm only human who think a lot.

Back to jinkook in BV4, especially in behind the scene. There's most of jinkook moment. That I got think a lot is the last behind the scene maybe ep 7 or 8 that TAEGI teased Jin by Calling Jungkook's name but their stare was to Seokjin and Seojkin also looked at them. It's 2 times TAEGI did that and Seokjin consciously looked back to them. My taejin heart was broken and then "yeah I should stop pairing". Feel sad to Tae :') but there's Taegi and vmin that these pairing are just like brotherhood and it made my day. There are some proofs about jinkook in BV4. And, actually I don't like jinkook ship, forgive me to other jinkook shipper, I don't mean. So, I don't think I would like to ship jinkook. It's over for me to ship anymore. Cause, taejin is first and last shipping I've ever done.

I don't know, sometime I feel like there are some famous BTS shipping to hide the real one.

Addition :

From BV4 also made me think and feel that JK "act (maybe)" as slave for Seokjin. The reason is there was jinkook interaction that Jin asked JK to take a cola for him but JK said he don't wear slipper then Jin gave his slipper to JK but I think "it was too much", maybe cause of different culture from me so I can't think like this. Jin gave his slipper from his foot to JK and JK took by his hands. So sad when watch this. And after that, Jin feed ice cream to JK sweetly. But it's for me just, "are you kidding me?"

I was just talking about this topic in the kpop thread and I found this thread. They for sure play up ships for fan service.

I've noticed even the variety shows and fan events the idols go on make them almost kiss, act out love scenes and play games that ship them. Sometimes you can see some of them are uncomfortable but the ones willing to do it take lead. I thought it was a Korean thing...but is it? Or is it a way to play up the closeness of members relationships?

Definitely a way to play up the closeness while toeing the line between was is acceptable vs sexualized.

I always think about the south park episode about the Jonas Brothers and Disney. Kpop company's are selling the same thing through their idols.

Oh wow...They used their purity rings to sell sex, that goes against what the ring stands for.

Yeah, that's what kpop is doing, selling sex to a young audience through a clean imagine. You wouldn't think their content as sexual because they're so sweet and nice. It's so manipulative.

I was just thinking today about how kpop is like Disney and boy bands on crack. They've taken that whole thing to a whole new level. Jonas Brothers and One Direction were sold as clean cut, prefect boyfriends but they didn't have things like shipping, skinships, fan service etc.

A 17 yr old Harry Styles was in a relationship with a 31 yr old?
People shipped One Direction together all the time - particularly Louis and Harry. At first they were quite affectionate with each other on stage but that stopped because of the shipping.
You don’t think the reason there was no skinship, fan service or shipping between the Jonas Brothers was because they were...em...brothers?? :D:D

The west have different values. Also 17yrd with a 31yr old is borderline creepy depends on the age of consent where they are. Also BTS are marketed as really close brotherhood and then they have all that skinship and it's seen as normal brother behavior. The Jonas Brothers were very much a clean cut Disney group, even when the youngest was dating Miley Cyrus. He still wore his purity ring.
Bts however are very sexual on stage, but it's never addressed by the public. Considering that they market their shows as family friendly and safe for children, and then hip thrust straight into the camera over and over

I’m sorry but do you not understand? BTS may be marketed as a close brotherhood but the Jonas Brothers are actual brothers? In what world would skinship between them be acceptable? That would be incestuous! Transgenderism isn’t acceptable to you but incest would be?
I live in the West - the U.K.to be more precise! I can tell you that Harry Styles’ relationship with Caroline Flack was not well received. Yes, he was above the age of sexual consent which is 16, but he fell into the grey area between sexual consent and adulthood. He was 17 and she was 14 years older than him. Lots of people thought that was wrong. I don’t really have an opinion either way about it and don’t want to drag it all up, given as the female celebrity involved recently committed suicide. Don’t be mistaken however, that people in the west found it acceptable.
As regards the Jonas brothers and their purity rings. They have quite openly talked about the fact that wearing them was part of a trend at the time. They came from religious backgrounds and at the time they wore them, they truly believed they would wait for the right time to have sex. As they got older and started dating, they realised that was no longer how they felt, so they removed the rings. That is their choice and their right. They said to continue wearing them was a lie because it wasn’t who they were anymore.

Back again to show your intelligence?
I didn't follow One Direction so I don't know what they did. They were sold as cute, nice boys, if you don't understand branding I can't help you. You just said they stopped being affectionate coz they didn't like it, that's not what kpop does, is it? You've been reading all the posts you should know by now.
The Jonas Brothers were the clean cut/boy friend material, fan service isn't just shipping.
I can't be bothered to talk to you because it's always going to be a back and forth. Discussions are good, but you're here to change people's mind, not discuss. I don't think you know the difference.

If I don’t understand branding?
Given that I live in one of the countries that One Direction were primarily marketed in, I think I might know a little bit more about how they were branded than you. Also, given that I was a parent and aunt of teenage girls at the time, as well being a volunteer with young teenage girls, I think that I might have a better insight into One Direction than someone who didn’t even follow them.
If you believe they were a cute, nice boy band it shows how naive you are. Don’t come here lecturing me on something you clearly know nothing about. It makes you look very immature. One Direction’s image of a cute, wholesome boy band really didn’t last beyond their debut - no matter how much you think you know.
Yes, the skinship they showed stopped due mostly to the shipping. That’s quite sad really. It shows the general trend in the west, that men who show affection towards each other are gay or weak. It’s probably part of the reason that young men in the west struggle so much with mental health issues, with suicide being almost endemic among young males in certain communities.
You think you’re so clever by coming here and trying to smart mouth people but all you do is show how little you really understand.
I am perfectly well aware thank you, of the differences between fan service, skinship and shipping. However, on what planet would any of those things be normal between brothers?
You wr something really stupid about One Direction and the Jonas Brothers. In what way was I trying to change your mind? I was merely trying to prevent you from looking stupid. If you’re going to write something, check the facts. You clearly waste a lot of energy on your Kpop theories. Try doing some research on the groups you choose to use, in an attempt to prove why Kpop is wrong.
Most Kpop groups look like angels compared to the likes of One Direction.
It might seem that I like to flaunt my intelligence over you. Perhaps that’s because you feel threatened by it? I’m not really sure though, that there is anything particularly intelligent about what I said. It’s just common sense.

I'm not about to go research One Direction just to continue this pointless argument with you. Their scandles are not part of their brand, what they did outside of that was separate to how they were being marketed. Also, I highly doubt their scandals were just beyond their debut. You're naive if you think Disney or young artists (male or female) are not being told to hide their private life or act differently to keep up appearances.
"However, on what planet would any of those things be normal between brothers?" "You wr something really stupid about One Direction and the Jonas Brothers." - That wasn't really my point. I was making a general statement about the difference between kpop and western groups, but you enjoy arguing so of course you'd find something to nit pick on. It's not about whether you're more intelligent than me or not...There's plenty of more intelligent people than me on here, you're just annoying and big headed. YOU think you know everything. You've been annoying everyone on here.

Oh, I don’t mean you should research them now. No, you misunderstood. You should have researched them before you said anything.
Look One Direction and Jonas Brothers aren’t even comparable.
The Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande - they all started out on Kids shows as charactera. They didn’t play themselves. Then they all went on to develop their own careers with varying degrees of success. If you listen to the Jonas Brothers, they will admit that at first their image was to be squeaky clean. However, when they became teenagers and started to date they said they could no longer keep up the image of being squeaky clean which is why they got rid of the purity rings. Their father was a pastor - in fact lots of those kids cane from religious backgrounds, just like Justin Bieber and Katy Perry did.
One Direction though, they were never “branded” in the way you think they were. They came up through a reality show which they didn’t even win. Their manager always recognised their potential as a boy group. Of course, their personal scandals affected their marketing. How naive are you to think it wouldn’t? Without the controversy they attracted - the duality between their squeaky clean side and their bad boy side - they probably wouldn’t have been so successful. They were photographed at parties, covered in tattoos, smoking joints and drunk. There were rumours after rumours of the girls they had been with. It was confirmed that Zayn Malik even dated another contestant from the hiw, even though there was a ban on dating between the contestants. No one was ever fooled by the clean cut, perfect boy band image.
The irony is that you are holding them up as paragons of virtue against Kpop boy groups who certainly aren’t attracting that kind of attention. NCT Dream now, are older than One Direction were when they debuted. They are like children compared to what One Direction were like. In South Korea, anyone under the age of 20 isn’t even allowed to be on stage, tv, live on social media etc after 10pm. In the West, a lot of groups don’t even start playing at a concert until after 9.30pm or later!
You might have been trying to make a point about the differences between Kpop bands and western boy bands. However, you clearly have no idea how different the cultures really are.

Lol you love to argue.
You know nothing about me to assume I don't know how different the cultures are. In fact, my culture is similar to theirs.
Yes, Disney stars and Jonas Brothers start of squeaky clean and break away from that after, who denied that?
I really don't understand why you're going on about this...Disney/teenage boy groups are marketed as wholesome that's not even a secret. Them breaking away from it is a different story. Kpop groups are also marketed as wholesome (also not a secret) but it's done on a whole new level. Culture plays a very small role, as you've read on the site many things kpop idols do go against their culture. I know you believe the wholesomeness in entertainment is all real so I won't bother anymore.

Anyway, keep believing the media and the lies they feed you.

Dont waste your time my friend, we all know that other user
Always turning a blind eye everytime someone post proof about kpop idols criminal behavior

Drunk driving, prostitution, adiction to heroin. You name it!!! and you will find kpop idols guilty of it
take a look at Big Bang....with one of the members even involved on a prostitution ring....that's enough evidence to show kpop is not innocent at all. The image idols show is fake and forced.

But behind the scenes they are not clean.....the story has been confirmed a million times with all the illegal scandals involving these people. After the kpop groups lose popularity they get exposed, and thats the reality of it

Those who want to remain blind and living in the "kpop unicorn world" can stay that way.
it's not our problem and they already made their decision. ;)

Yeah, I'm going to try and ignore her. The atmosphere here is so negative because of the arguing.

Lol yeah, Korea is not a magical unicorn place where people don't get into drugs and prostitution etc. Kpop is just the Hollywood of Korea. Idols are exposed to all those things. Their companies are good at hiding it because they're the ones exposing them to it. Even if you think about it not knowing about the darkness surrounding kpop, it doesn't make sense that every idol is squeaky clean. Not everyone thinks or lives the same way.

It's strange to me that people can turn a blind eye when there's so much proof. You just need to out two and two together. Oh well...
