There is a difference between romanticizing and talking bluntly about a topic. Just because he is an artist doesn't necessarily mean that he doesn't feel depressed and should romanticize the feelings to gain attention. He is really depressed and he wants people like him to relate. Maybe he is not depressed irl, we never know, but what he says about depression is all true. All depressed people see life as agonizing, heavy and tiring, he is just telling the truth. It is not the best message you can find out there, but that is how depressed people see it. It's not brainwashing, it's pure illness. I don't think we should judge him at this part, depression has been, is and will still be a problem. Whether he promotes it or not, getting out of that state is harder than one may think. But talking about how bad life feels in there, eases the pain. We don't feel it, cause we haven't been through it, therefore we can't be affected by it. No song will make us depressed if we are mentally healthy. Those who are depressed will only find a door to feel better, it isn't necessarily a sinister message behind it.
