Bronies?! Am I crazy, or is this adult-male obsession with My Little Pony super creepy?!

So I'm not sure if this common knowledge or not, but randomly scrolling through the internet today, I stumbled across "Bronies" & had to reach out to my fellow VCs. (As with most internet paths, I was reading an article, which led to other articles, which led to watching David Lynch's "Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times)" on YouTube & if that wasn't odd enough, the comments led to Bronies. (On YouTube, someone commented that they should redo the film with ponies, and a self-proclaimed "Furry" called the poster a "Bronie"). Being the overly curious person I am, I had new topic to investigate... and this one is a doozy. I'm sure most of you remember "My Little Pony" - the cute little toy & 80s cartoon show was something I remember loving as a child. The people in this forum are already well-versed on the adult themes hidden in cartoons, from Disney to Sponge Bob, but I never heard "My Little Pony" cited as an example.... until today.

All it took was entering "bronie" into Google & yowza, a whole new like-minded group exploded in the search results. Basically, "My Little Pony" was rebooted by a woman named Lauren Faust (interesting last name...I immediately thought of the Faustian Bargain to make a deal with the devil, but it could just be a coincidence...) & the reboot has attracted so many adult-male fans that they have termed themselves "Bronies". Sounded creepy, but hey, I thought maybe it is just nerdy guys trying to be overly ironic or something, who am I to judge? So I pressed on... and did not like what I found... it seems that the "My Little Pony" reboot purposely included adult themes, and now has "Bronies" making odd fan videos. Remember the VC article about YouTube & the corruption of knock-off cartoons to include violence, sex, & other adult themes as a way to secretly traumatize kids? If not, let me link you: https://vigilantcitizen.com/moviesandtv/something-is-terribly-wrong-with-many-kids-videos-on-youtube/

It appears the same thing is now being done with “My Little Pony”, only the creator (Faust) is proud that there are so many adult fans (so proud that they even made a YouTube promo video for Bronies to the theme song of Katy Perry’s “California Girls”:
**note the specific "shout-out" to Bronies**)

This means that a cartoon designed for toddler-aged females is now openly catering to an adult-male fanbase… but that doesn’t mean that these young kids are going to stop watching the show. It means that, once again, today’s youth will subconsciously be served adult topics through a seemingly innocuous platform. There are articles praising Bronies, commending them for escaping the “hyper-sexualized male ego” and being comfortable not only watching, but actively celebrating & replicating a show intended for female children. https://www.wired.com/2011/06/bronies-my-little-ponys/
(Side note, WTF is “hypermasculine” about an adult male NOT wanting to watch a child’s cartoon about magical ponies? I consider that “normal”… If I met a guy & found out he was a My Little Pony fanboy, I would leave skid marks running for the door… but hey, maybe that's why I am still single...)

Apparently I am not the only one troubled by this, though I definitely seem to be in the minority. I found the following article criticizing Bronies, revealing that they have creating My Little Pony (MLP) porn, use terms like “clopping” for “masturbating”, and there is even “Princess Molestia” (a play on MLP character “Princess Celestia”). https://www.baltimoresun.com/citypaper/bcp-the-problem-with-bronies-20140801-story.html

That is when I stopped reading and came here… has anyone else heard of this? And if so, are you as creeped out as I am?? Granted I haven’t watched My Little Pony for probably like 25 years or so, but I really don’t think the original show had underlying adult themes – or at least I have never seen it explicitly mentioned. But the fact that the reboot has garnered SO MANY adult men as fans that they literally have a name (Bronies) left my skin crawling. I just randomly stumbled upon this, so I wasn’t sure if you all have heard of this phenomenon or had any insight, but I felt it deserved being discussed. I don’t personally have children, but if I did, I would want to know that My Little Pony (MLP, for short) has this sinister side to it… apparently just googling “Pinkie Pie” (a character on the show) will quickly lead to images & videos of this poor Pony in very adult situations.

Normally I really don’t care what consenting adults do in their spare time, it’s not my place to judge - if no one is being hurt. BUT, to take a child’s platform & purposely corrupt it for sick, deviant behavior is just plain wrong. Especially since it appears nothing being done to curb this aberrant misuse of a trademarked cartoon – quite the opposite actually, it is being promoted by the creator of the reboot! THAT I have a MAJOR problem with…. If some weirdos want to make a sexed up, violent version of a cartoon, it should be forced to use a different name so there is no confusion with the actual show, because no child needs to lose their innocence just for clicking the wrong link… Again, I don’t know if this is widely known, but I just stumbled upon “Bronies” & am still reeling.

Am I crazy, or is this all just too wrong?! I mean, no offense, but even the guys that are shown & quoted in the "positive" Brony article creep the hell out of me… collecting dolls, remaking videos using ponies – I swear I can see their creepiness oozing through their photos….there is even a BronyCon for these male fans! (which of course includes sexualized versions of the Ponies, so any unsuspecting parent could easily bring their young daughter there without realizing the depravity waiting behind the convention’s doors). Of note, the reboot is called “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” which immediately sounded like “grooming” to me…

Oh & did I mention that the target audience for the show is ages 2-12? Are you as creeped out as I am now?!?!

It's creepy. My daughter loves it. It makes me nauseous, but I have to watch it with her, (even though we only watch downloaded stuff), because I don't let my children watch something I haven't already seen alone. My sons (ranging from 10 to late teens) leave the room. I can't imagine any male beyond the age of say, 5 going for this.

Might sound like a stretch to some, but to me it's just another symptom of the diabolical gender bending being forced down our throats.

That definitely makes sense... so do you notice the adult subtext when you are watching the reboot of My Little Pony? Sorry, this is a new one to me (BRONIES!??!) so I am just curious. That's great that you are able to watch everything with her - it really is sad that you can't even trust a friggin cartoon! It's something that definitely scares me if I have kids... there is so much to worry about!

I mean, if I was a kid today, I know people would try to convince me I was a "boy" because I swear, I feel like I deal with that BS as an ADULT. As a child, I went from liking super girlie things then switched to playing outside, doing sports - I was your typical tomboy. So I had grass-stains & bruises & came home dirty. Now, as an adult, people always say I act "like a guy" - I still don't know what that means... I work & will tell you how I feel & enjoy watching football, but I am definitely a female (and happy to be a woman!) Maybe because I don't like going shopping? (or insert some other random stereotype here) ...Honestly, I don't know, but it is very irritating... I also get asked if I am a lesbian far more often than I think is appropriate (is it ever appropriate?!) Again, I don't understand why, other than the fact that I don't have a husband/boyfriend... But it is maddening... I don't think I "defy" gender roles or what it is to be a female at all (hell, I wear make-up & high heels during normal non-pandemic circumstances!) - and if it is this frustrating for me as a grown woman, I can't even IMAGINE how hard it must be for children& teenagers... There must be so much pressure to be gender fluid for kids today, it really must be so confusing...

Anyways, sorry for my rant, I just really worry about how this extra pressure will affect kids, and it makes me sad...

"...so do you notice the adult subtext when you are watching the reboot of My Little Pony?"
Honestly, I haven't, but then we only have a few episodes. I'm not crazy about stuff with unicorns, I know what they symbolize.

"...this is a new one to me (BRONIES!??!)"

I hadn't heard about this term before you posted, but it doesn't suprise me. Thank fully, we are nearly completely off the grid, so we tend to fall behind the trends.

"...there is so much to worry about!"
That's what the enemy wants you to do - worry. It's the counterfit to faith. Sometimes we have reason to be justfiably angry (and we can't even entertain that long), but we should never worry.

"I mean, if I was a kid today, I know people would try to convince me I was a "boy" because I swear, I feel like I deal with that BS as an ADULT. If this upside-down so-called "society" that satan's servants have constructed in an attempt to confuse you with reality, things frequently aren't what they appear. If you took any, "normal" woman from say a century and a half ago, they'd probably all be accused of tomboys. My wife gets that, my daughter gets that, all my aunts but one get that, my mother got that, most of my girlfriends before I was married got accused of that - I think it's horsehockey. It has to be for so many to be accused of something that's supposedly "abnormal".
Someone once said, "...normal is what everyone else is, and you are not." IOW, there really is no such thing. Everyone's different to a degree.

"There must be so much pressure to be gender fluid for kids today, it really must be so confusing..."
There most certainly is.

I heard about this "Bronies" business many (10? more?) years ago. Like @Bianca, I thought it was just some male super fan phenomena, and chose not to dwell on it much more.
UNTIL nearly simultaneous, who or whatever made me aware of Briones also informed me about Furries, and how their preferences were NOT just liking stuffed animals, but that they had a coital fetish with them.

Again within a very short time frame I listened to one of the weirdest episodes of Coast to Coast I've heard (that's saying something). It was about some male human who believed he was a horse. And he was very serious.

At the time besides wondering if there was something weird in the water affecting these folks, I remember shaking my head of all the ways people keep trying to friction-ize their genitals. I just hoped they wouldn't take it to the next step and trying to make it sound normal doing it with kids or animals.

To be fair, the horse dude did not actually say this was his thing. But I've learned that this kind of thing is usually a matter of time (or censoring on broadcast AM radio).

Ol' Coast to Coast. I remember listening to them when I was stationed on the other side mountains from Pahrump in the early & mid 90's. It was so ironic hearing them talking BS periodically about what we were guarding. Later, I found out that Art Bell was prior Air Force too. Still later, I found out that he was a high-level Freemason, and then everything started to fall into place.

Good find. Sadly, the terrible messages in kids' cartoons are as old as cartoons themselves.

Parents may do well to cut out all nonsense from their kids' lives to the best of their abilities.

I had to comment on this because 6 years ago a colleague of mine (A 24 year old guy) was obsessed with little pony and even made a fanclub for it. I thought it was very weird at the time but 2 years later (when i had already left the company) i had a look at his profile and he had became a transgender. He looked so creepy as a woman as he didnt even try really, he just wore very bad wigs. But i always thought that his little pony obsession had something to do with it.

Bronies are like furries. Fucking weird, but 99.5% of them are harmless. I don't get either, but I met some people who were part of the fandom and they were decent folks.

Never understood the bronies appeal but when I was a young male kid and teenager, I watched sailor moon and Powerpuff girls. They're geared towards the female sex but a good show is a good show I say. I own most of the sailor moon manga still. Actually might re read it after I finish DragonBall again.

At comic conventions, I've seen dudes dress up as MLP characters and sailor moon characters.

I'm no expert to say what is harmful or not. As long as one isn't taking it to a sexual/pedo thing, live and let live. Bit obviously there are sicko perverts in this world.

I myself never dressed up for a convention though I did come close to going as commander Riker and my gf as Deanna troi, both from star trek the next generation, though we ultimately didn't.

Agreed.

I think this easily segues into because majority of people playing too much call of duty and watching too many zombie shows and movies they think they will be experts in an apocalyptic scenario.

I've noticed this trend that most think they could be expert survivors and will be the hero of the story, not understanding reality is far more dangerous than fictional narratives.

Hyper Fandom is certainly responsible for that.

Anyways, hope this doesn't derail the OT, just adding on to the mental dangers of obsessive fandom.

Most of this just seems like fairly innocent fetishes between consenting adults.

However, I think the important point that the OP raised was that children looking for children's stuff can stumble upon this adult material.

That is worrying. the availability of adult material to children is very worrying.

Bronies, such as myself, have been around for nearly a decade. Only, like, half of us are perverted degenerates. But it really is a good show. Not my fault ninety percent of television is shit and I have to watch a kid's show to find something good. It ended on a very bad note though with an episode that had a super creepy totaltarian moral.

Are you?
Or was that a joke?

If you are then have fun!
But don't leave the pink pony sex where the kids can see it.

Yeah. In fact, I was going to suggest VC look at the MLP finale. It's screwed up beyond all belief. Most decent Bronies left the fandom over it.
