France Considers Establishing Age of Sexual Consent, Official Suggests 13, Protests Ensue

French justice minister Nicole Belloubet said that 13 was a "limit worth considering." Current law states that an adult who
engages in a sex act with someone under the age of 15" without violence, coercion, threat or surprise" can be prosecuted for "sexual abuse," but not r*pe. Advocates who combat sexual exploitation are criticizing her statement. "There is a worldwide crisis of sexual exploitation of children, and such a policy change would benefit adult sexual predators who wish to prey on children, because the law would provide them a false veneer of legitimacy in their exploits," said Patrick Trueman, president of the Washington-based National Center on Sexual Exploitation.

The problem I see, is that they can't enforce these laws in an even handed way. Another example is the child porn law affecting teenagers. Like how can you label a teenager a sex offender, when passing naked pictures is so common. Do we really want our children being prime targets for the police?

It makes no sense to me. A kid is an easy bust. We are teaching them to act a certain way, and then only punishing certain ones. That leads to a lack of trust. It leads to disorder. People need to trust the police and that type of profiling has been proven to be wrong.

in the west the age of consent would have to be at least 30.

people (males & females) behave way too immature way too long.

the mental & physical state has to match - not only one or the other - both of them are required at the same time.

that's why defining an age of consent will never work.

No one wants it too work.Exploiting young gullible minds, thats what this is about. How hard it can be to lie for a 15-14 age old teenager, little true love, little romance and you in bed with her. Or you can pick somebody from asocial family for money. Sex tourism legalized...

30!?!?! That reeks of prudishness. Chronological age is a perfectly acceptable standard for an age of consent. because after a certain point people are just going to fuck; rules be damned.

having sex means taking up responsibilities or at least being able to do so.

responsibilities come with requirements.

people from the west seem to detest or to be allergic to reponsibilities & anything attached to them.

"fuck?" - "hell yeah!" - "but ay no strings attached - aight!?"

considering the rest of what i wrote (after the first sentence) in my first post would have helped to understand that this has nothing to do with prudishness in any way shape or form but rather with the state of western society (that can be observed by all).

I dont really ubderstand why we say 18 is a legal adult but then make the legal age of adult activities different when it suits our whims. 18 should just be it.. blanket across all things imo. That doesnt mean teenagers cant or wont have sex, it just means doing so with an adult is illegal - its a limit on adults really.

I dont think kids should be marked as sex offenders for sending their own nude pix to a similarly aged peer. And i dont think child prostitutes should be prosecuted either - go after the johns.

NAMBLA just got their Brokeback Mountain

"...a major motion picture about a gauzy romance between an adult man and a teenage boy.
The Sony Pictures Classics film “Call Me By Your Name” has been generating Oscar buzz since Monday after picking up three Golden Globe nominations, including one for best motion picture- drama, amid rave reviews."

This will be normalised, whether we like it or we don't.

HOW POP CULTURE CHANGED THE FACE OF THE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE DEBATE
I don’t know why but this reminded me of a movie that I have been wanting to mention. This movie has seriously haunted me since I was like 13 or 14. It was called Total eclipse and Leonardo Di Caprio was in it, which was why I rented it from the movie store.

Leonardo plays some 16 year old poet who has an affair with a married older man. It was so beyond what I expected. It still makes me feel sick when I think about it.

It was made in 1995 and it was slow and didn’t get good ratings like this movie, but it definitely belongs in the same discussion.

Ever since, I have never been able to shake the feeling that leornardo di caprio was being molested. It has made my head hurt for years looking for signs.

I saw this after I saw Romeo and Juliet which was a big hit that made him popular and it looks like that was released the following year. This movie was released in 1995. Romeo and Juliet was 1996 and then titanic was 1997.

That just makes me feel queasy. I would never recommend watching the movie unless you were investigating the subject.

Sometimes I just look at him now and I can’t help but feel like something is just not right.

Although, this movie sounds like the age range is squeezed into the gray zone where someone is just bordering on being too old and the other one is bordering on not being old enough.

I’ve actually seen several shows with this. Smallville where Lana dated that college guy. Pretty Little Liars is another one where one of the girls was dating the teacher.

So the article made sense in pointing out that this does raise concerns in light of other things we know, while still being able to cling to innocence. This is what I would called deceptive but that’s just me.

I would agree with that. I've heard of teenagers who been punished and labeled as a sex offender for having pictures of their own naked bodies on their cell phones. I think that is silly. Nobody should be punished the rest of their life for doing stupid things as a teen. I know it technically IS child porn and probably isn't a very good idea, but teenagers are attracted to other teenagers and that is perfectly normal. Just restrict their access to a phone, laptop, tablet, etc., and be done with it.

I think the law should get involved only if it is a grown adult asking for the picture or if things get out of hand and the picture is spread around the entire school or something like that.

As for the age of consent, I think it's fine as it is. It should stay at age 16 with the partner being a maximum of 3 years older until you hit 18. Then you can get with anyone you want who's of a consenting age whether they're 16 or 65 (I don't know why an 18 year old would want to get with someone that old, but just in case they do). Not a day before then, though. If they really do love you they'll be willing to wait. As justjess said, though, it is different with people with positions of authority like teachers.
