The first thing that came to my mind after watching the trailer was this:
"Numerous critics complained that the movie largely amounted to a Navy recruitment film. The U.S. Navy stated that the film's popularity resulted in a 500 percent increase in the number of recruits wanting to enter into their aviation program. Paramount offered to include a Navy Recruitment ad on the initial home video release in exchange for debits owed the U.S. Navy for their cooperation. However, the ad agency who produced ads for the U.S. Military informed the Pentagon that the movie itself was enough of a propaganda tool, and that an official recruiting ad would be redundant."

To me, the timing of the release is very interesting…..a year from now/summer 2020, and I don’t think its coincidental at all given how helpful the first movie was to the DOD. I also remember reading that Top Gun 2 was in the works before Tony Scott’s death. Anyway, how powerful this piece of propaganda will be this time around, in banishing VA scandals and Veteran suicides from the minds of prospective conscripts is up to anyone to guess. I suppose that in asking that question, iam simply and vastly underestimating the power of the moving picture over the mind.

While your concerns are valid, It's not anything new. The DoD works with Hollywood often..HERE and HERE. One would expect most of the movies in the first link to have DoD involvement. Others leave you questioning...Why that movie?

His name alone gets top recognition in the media and his movies are still high grossing, think of his mission impossible series..so why not have him in the movie?

true.
or maybe they will be pushing people of all ages to sign up - not just younger - there are always articles how young people are historically unhealthy with always being on phones and screens...

Maybe they think he can still sell it but I’m sure there will also be good looking, young men in the movie for younger men to emulate. Tom Cruise is just gonna get people in the theater with name recognition. I think they made the sequel too late really. I watched the first one years ago, how did that movie make it..o ya, a hot, young, Tom Cruise...lol!

yes.
what about all of the marvel movies - i haven't seen any but aren't they all about wars and violence and saving the world? seems like those have been prepping people for war for years. ... not to mention the crazy box office numbers they all receive - $$$$$$

I have to admit I like those movies, not the violence, but I like the storylines and the way they linked them all together was a stroke of genius really. Its hard to come into the middle of them and you end up having to watch them all. I thought the Ultron one was a throwaway, cash grab movie, but Endgame shows that that movie was a foreshadowing of events to come, and saved it.

I think the movies are about the characters too but they do have quite a bit of violence since the superhero’s can’t do things like elastagirl in Incredibles2... she gets the job because she isn’t as destructive as her husband and frozone...lol!

https://www.spyculture.com/leave-the-top-gun-quotes-to-us-us-navy-not-happy-the-air-force-is-muscling-in-on-top-gun-maverick/

A recent social media post shows that when it comes to Top Gun: Maverick the US Navy are protective of ‘their’ territory and don’t want the Air Force muscling in on the act. The movie is expected to be the greatest military recruitment vehicle since… well, since the original Top Gun, and while the Air Force are keen to associate themselves with Maverick the Navy are not happy.
