God's word acctually refers to The Law as bondage and a yoke of slavery. Something that one is indebted and obligated to completely fulfill. Every jot and precept within the old covenant if that is the righteousness they seek to live by.
Galatians 2:1-5
English Standard Version
2 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. 2 I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. 3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4
Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— 5 to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.
Galatians 4:21-31
English Standard Version
21
Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24 Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are
two covenants.
One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia;[
a] she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in
slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,
“Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear;
break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor!
For the children of the desolate one will be more
than those of the one who has a husband.”
28 Now you,[
b] brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the
slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brothers,
we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.
Galatians 5
English Standard Version
5 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and
do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
2 Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that
he is obligated to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified[
a] by the law; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For
through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.
7 You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. 11 But if I, brothers,[
b] still preach[
c] circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. 12 I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy,[
d] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do[
e] such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
God's word also refers to The Law as the ministry of death and condemnation. It is perfect, holy, and good, but to imperfect and fallen man it spells his guilt and doom.
2 Corinthians 3
English Standard Version
3 Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or from you? 2 You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our[
a] hearts, to be known and read by all. 3 And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.[
b]
4 Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who has made us
sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For
the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7 Now if
the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses' face because of its glory, which
was being brought to an end, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? 9 For if there was glory in
the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. 10 Indeed, in this case,
what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if
what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory.
12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of
what was being brought to an end. 14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day,
when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16 But when one[
c] turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord[
d] is the Spirit, and
where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,[
e] are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.[
f] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
The law makes nothing perfect. In fact Paul realized it could only ever indict him.
Romans 7:1-10
English Standard Version
7 Or do you not know, brothers[
a]—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that
the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies
she is released from the law of marriage.[b] 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies,
she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
4 Likewise, my brothers,
you also have died to the law through the body of Christ,
so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead,
in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But
now we are released from the law, having died to
that which held us captive,
so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.[c]
7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9
I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10
The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.
Galatians 3:10-14
English Standard Version
10 For
all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide
by all things written in the Book of the Law,
and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”[
a] 12 But the law is not of faith, rather
“The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from
the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit[
b] through faith.
if you live by the righteousness of The Law and don't keep it then you are not obedient the standard you are trying to impose on others.
