Soldier Excited To Take Over Father’s Old Afghanistan Patrol Route
FAYETTEVILLE, NC—Saying he “never could have imagined” he would have the opportunity to follow directly in his father’s footsteps, 19-year-old U.S. Army Pvt. Tyler Corcoran was reportedly excited Tuesday to take over his dad’s old patrol route in Afghanistan....he had heard his father’s stories of guarding the forward operating base but never once considered that he would one day be traversing along the exact walls and securing the identical checkpoints his father had during his tours of duty...

American Blackout
A tour of the solar eclipse’s path reveals a nation that fought to maintain a different sort of totality....
It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people....Presumably, this is not explained by the implicit bias of the solar system.

unbelievable, isnt it? instead of making the africans strive to perfect their english skills, the BBC simply creates a pidgin english website. BBC does NOT want them aiming high or bettering themselves.
Don't you think with that reasoning we should ridicule languages that originate from Latin but are now very different? Or even English for that matter. It has changed a lot over time. Obviously in Africa, which is kind of isolated from the rest of the world, English will become a different language over time. What I think you could argue about is the fact that BBC is funded by the government and they should not be wasting money on offering all these different translations.

I teach the very people you're referring to, there's nothing wrong with their English and an accent doesn't mean they have a lesser understanding of the language. The BBC is simply catering for the Caribbean community who speak pidgin English even in their own countries. They can probably access the site from there but I'm sure most U.K. Residents read the general version of the news not the pidgin

besides the fact that pidgin english is 'newspeak', you think half-assing the learning of a language is good enough? or are you saying that the africans (not the caribs, by the way) are too lazy or dumb to learn proper english?

pidgin is an attempt at the english language. its for semi-literate speakers. "accent" is cockey english or that irish brogue or american southern drawl, or the american flat-accent of the midwest. pidgin is not an accent. is that what you want africans to strive for? semi-literacy?

keep the bar low. that way, africans NEVER have a chance.

aside from that main point, pidgin has a minuscule english vocabulary. the rapidly shrinking vocabulary is a problem within itself. we are losing the language. theres been studies that show people with larger vocabularies are happier-- theyre able to express themselves clearer to others. fine shades of meaning are essential not only in expression to others, but in literature and other written art. true english with countless words are the millions of colors available to the naked eye. pidgin locks one down to black, white and gray.

im shocked that the BBC has done this. im MORE shocked that you are in favor of it, haich. pull these people UP; dont pat them on the head and say that semi-literacy is good enough.

You have no idea what you're talking about, the Caribbean, especially the Jamaican community, speak pidgin English. If you listen to Usain Bolt in some interviews he speaks it too. There was a forum member a while back (can't remember his/her name) who was posting in pidgin English and no one could understand them and thought they were trolling. It's a real form of communication so I don't see why you have an issue with it.

Who are 'these people?' How condescending of you, you think you're better than them because you don't speak or read in pidgin? How ridiculous. You're clearly not from a cosmopolitan city and probably only hear 'perfect english' daily.

Semi literacy? lol that's just down right rude. They speak perfectly good English, it's not their fault you think an accent is bothersome.

Well their ancestors were either displaced slaves who were tortured and abused by 'English speakers' or they were themselves a product of colonialism so maybe if they were left alone in their native homelands they wouldn't be ruining your perfectly English world.

Studies have shown people are happier when the sun is out. So what? Happiness is subjective and an abstract concept such as joy can't be measured by statistics. What about deaf people, you saying they can't express themselves so they're less happier than the average person?

If I research hard enough, I'm sure I'll find a statistic to prove anything, no matter how ridiculous it sounds.

pidgin is not an accent. pidgin is incomplete, botched, poor excuse for the english language. i can speak spanish poorly, but no way in hell would i try to justify it as being an accent or a legit form of spanish. my spanish is incomplete and is not up to par with actual spanish. thats it. i am semi literate, and i need to develop it better. what i DONT need is someone creating a website to cater to my lousy spanish needs.

"a real form of communication". only because enough people speak inaccurately, has it become accepted... but only by people who simply accept mediocrity in learning.

"better than them" because i speak english properly? LOL. if someone points out that my spanish is bad, i agree with them and let them know i am making an effort to learn. i dont say, "oh, you must think youre superior to me, huh, because you speak proper spanish!"

but i still want an answer: are you saying that pidgin speakers are too lazy or stupid to complete their education and learn proper english?
