I understood somewhat about what kids are dealing with in today’s age, but not to this depth. Hearing the details of a young person’s life, from their perspective, was pretty eye opening for me, esp discovering how YOUNG some of these kids are when they’re introduced to sex, and then (mostly boys) become hypnotized by it in a way that totally fks with human connection.

Blurb:
For the first time in history, mental illness and suicide have become one of the greatest threats to school-aged children. Many parents still view dangers as primarily physical and external, but they’re missing the real danger: kids spending more time online and less time engaging in real life, free play, and autonomy. What are the effects on the next generation's mental, physical, and spiritual health? Childhood was more or less unchanged for millennia, but this is CHILDHOOD 2.0.

Excellent doc! Having grown up as a child without a phone, social media and other distractions, we as kids were forced to go out and play, interact with other kids, use our imaginations and physically build stuff like go carts and forts. We were out all day playing, came home to eat supper and went back outside till dark all summer long.

Later I got into music and playing in bands, going downtown to play vids and buy music and hang with friends. No phones, no social media, no online porn, just face to face conversation and the odd playboy magazine.

It drives me nuts watching kids in groups on their phones 24/7 and they look so bored!..??

Another interesting change that has occurred in the last few years is that many kids don't play a musical instrument. Having worked with youth I can attest to this. It's really odd, growing up nearly everyone of my friends played an instrument.

A few years back, I spoke to the owner of a used music store about how well his business was doing. He said not so good, kids today are not buying guitars anymore. I asked him why that was. He said it's today's music, a lot of kids don't listen to rock music anymore. His store eventually went bankrupt. Sad.

So how do they create music?
DJ equip/synthetic sounds/mix-boards?

Not that I care, but the artist, Grimes, got started musically this way.
I forget what its called but she uses a program that allows her to lay tracks down/loops/etc.

I think Billie Eilish, does the same.

Musically I appreciate their sound, but neither are original.

A lot of "new" stuff is a throwback to early new wave music....
To me a lot of it sounds like Casio keyboard sounds done on a loop with heavy synth sounds. Everything is over-produced and artificial with auto tune singing. It's really awful stuff.

Maybe it's Garageband?
Or something like that??

I think some new music can sound nice or cool or whatever, but original it is not...

Lol, bet VC would know!
Listen to Drake...dated electronic drum beats and sound fx over synth/piano with maybe 3-4 chord changes and auto tune talking vocals. Usually the only good part of any of these types of songs is the sampled section, cause it reminds people that music was once amazing and that people could write and perform real music...old school.

Being in the music scene, I know that digital is DEF the go-to nowadays, at least for people around my age 30's - 40's+ (except people I know who are my age actually do play some kind of instrument). Pro-Tools etc., with midi keyboards, looping machines. They come with packages fully loaded with beats and sounds. I can see that being the direction young people will move into. It's just so easy and now more affordable with music making programs of the like.

The interesting part is that these kids are intelligent and understand that this is the world they’ve been born into, and now faced with navigating OUT of it in search of a simpler life that’s organic and real. They seem to understand that this digital “reality” is killing their souls in a way.

Such heavy challenges. I can’t remember being faced with anything like this, aside from the occasional neighborhood bullies and/or having a teacher catch a note passed in class and getting exposed!

I don't think it's the existence of all the things we have that's a problem... But a certain combination of things.

Parents simultaneously over parent ("If my kid goes out trick-or-treating at night they might get hurt! Better do it in broad daylight!") and under parent ("Here's an iPhone, shut the fuck up and leave me alone.") This leaves kids with a lot of free time to waste in the digital space.

That leads to over-stimulation. I mean, when I was a kid, all I did was play the same video games, read the same comic books, and mess around outside with friends playing the same games... As a teenager, I played the same video games, read the same books, and listened to the same records with friends... Now, even as an adult, I feel like there's too much media to actually consume.

That’s what it is. Boredom.
They have no mental/critical developing stimuli

That depends on their parents approach too. We raise ours within a more organic structure than a digital structure.

My oldest does digital stuff but he has his friends

We require our kids to go outside everyday when they are home so as to counteract the screen time. I am glad they like to explore and pretend still. The lure of video games is still very strong though.

I am going to sound like an old man, but today's music sucks. It sounds so lifeless and artificial to me. There is no warmth to it, no errors in it, to machine like. It is all too edited, produced, packaged and marketed to be honest to me.

Today’s youth lacks creativity. The instant gratification has decreased attention span and actual work/pride involved

So very true! Taking the time to do a job right the first time has gone out the window. Its more like, "How can I get through with this as fast as possible with the least amount of hassle?"

The nuclear family has made people more isolated imo, because of the lack of community. The school system is also failing these kids for various reasons.

I like your style. When I was a kid, our parents made us go outside. There was Nintendo, which would require our friends coming over, but then we might go outside and play after (or vice versa). I do think if we grew up in the digital era (like if that was in the 80's-90's), parents and kids would be exactly where we are today.

and I also think today's music SUCKS and often wonder if the elders who told me that when I WAS a kid were right...? so this would mean ALL music eventually sucks for everyone at some point :D

I know that happens with every generation an the following generation's musical taste. My grand parents hated my parents music and my parents hated my music and now I hate my kids mysic. Lol.
