I'll admit I have to be in the mood for this song because it's a bit gooey and "sacchariney", but it does remind me of my younger years:

These two brothers I think do an impressive job as they call their version the "Clone Cover". I say it's pretty close:

completely trashed here by Madonna

Agreed. I haven't listened to her version in decades and don't plan to either. However, I always liked this version. You can tell it's from the '90s, with the Soul II Soul feel to it. I remember taping this song from a cassette that a friend of mine bought over in the UK and thought this version was pretty cool. Unfortunately, I lent my tape to my now ex-bf, and he never gave it back to me, but thanks to the Internet, I can listen to it at my leisure:

This song is why I bought the Pump Up The Volume soundtrack. :p
I remember that movie! ♡
(I didn't know this was on the soundtrack though.)

Another Leonard Cohen cover, then --

Now, I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah...

The lyrics seem to change at the 3rd verse, with each incarnation-- and there are plenty.

This is in my top ten songs, the original was 1978, I remembered taping this song from the radio but then my cassette player chewed it up....out with a pencil to try and recoil the tape. This will not make any sense at all if read by a millennial

Came across this version by My Morning Jacket with Eddie Vedder by accident. I must say it does justice to the original IMHO.

Naturally, I think we all know this version as I think it was in every radio station's contract to play this song every hour back in the winter of '92/93:

This young lady, Alyona Yarushina, does one fantastic rendition of Whitney's version. It's better than that JHud trash and she even flawlessly sings the run at the end:

...and this one is for you @Awoken2 . While it's certainly not Steve Perry, I still think Alyona does an excellent cover. What an incredible talent:

Awwww thanks OM. Yes I have this starlet in my YouTube Channel playlist already. She knocked that Whitney number out of the park. Despite the original being at No1 in the charts for what felt like 7 years leaving it indelibly imprinted on your mind for many years after I really enjoyed hearing it again.....I didn't want to run out of the door screaming once.
