If the average person not using a mask properly won't be disastrous, can't the case also be made, that not wearing them at all also wouldn't be a disaster?
Yes, technically it could, which is why it would be nice to start seeing some more information on how this is traveling by air. It is understandable to feel frustrated by the information that is being given. I feel frustrated by it myself, but I do know it is going to hurt anything to reuse a mask. How it will help specifically, I don't entirely know. If I had my way, that would be the first area of focus.

Literally, @justjess has said more about this in this thread than I have really even seen anywhere else. I took a screenshot of the numbers the other day because most of the northeast is requiring a mask. In comparison, I think Georgia and Florida are as well, but it seems they are more complacent than the north is, so I'm basically determined at this point to know for myself one way or the other by watching their numbers. I don't know that I expect anything to be published about this any time soon, but I would hope I would be wrong about this.

It is totally frustrating that this is such a loose end right now in a discussion like this.

If your looking at world health ometers some of the states now have their own pages, they have the states daily totals put out in little graphs which makes it a lot easier to track. Hopefully they will get them up for other states too. For now you can look at NJ if you’d like. There stay at home order was given March 9th, masks became mandatory April 8th, look at the graph yourself and see the trend.specifically the graph for daily new cases.

Now... there can be other explanations for this. The virus may have finally started to run through all its potential victims, the weather might have changed (its still cold out here so idk but possible), better cleaning of stores may have started, they might be doing less testing (I’m tracking this seperately because it isn’t being tracked anywhere)... idk. But taken together with similar trends in other states, plus Austria’s experience.. it’s something to look at.

I hope I’m right. Because I’d much rather wear a mask and be able to get on with my life then have the whole world shut down and every goal I have put Indefinitely on hold.

Do people believe this virus is as bad as they say it is? In Canada the majority of the deaths, 90%, has come from the elderly in long term care homes. And for all I know they could have died from a cold.

I don't know the whole story but I sure don't believe the governments side to this is the whole truth.

What you see as a loose end I see as clear evidence we are being punked. Like, let's not kid ourselves. The mask craze isn't really about safety, it's about corporate liability. Meaning no business is going to let themselves get sued over it.

I've looked at some of the numbers, and I wonder if you might be only looking for the information that confirms what you believe. There is no clear pattern of masks making any difference across the board. Maybe there are some specific cases where the COVID cases dropped, but that could be due to many other factors.

In Ohio, there haven't been any changes. We have been through every stage of the plan at this point. At first, we did nothing, then they closed businesses, now we have to wear masks. In every stage, the number of new cases has risen at a pretty consistent rate.

I knew the states had their own pages, but I didn't know the graphs. I will have to look more closely at that.

I liked that they were separating the cities within the state's page. I am also watching Austin, Texas because they require masks and seem to be compliant. They also have a low number of cases and in theory, if masks are effective, this should remain low and they should be one of the first cities to report no new cases over the course of a couple of weeks just like Iceland has.

Technically, even though I am still iffy about China's numbers, wearing masks is an automatic thing for everything contagious over there. Maybe their numbers have some legitimacy and masks are beneficial.

I would actually like to see some evidence this is helpful too because it really seems like the easiest solution to this situation. Wearing a mask is really a mild inconvenience.

I think the mask craze was more about the public being uncertain about whether they should wear a mask. I don't think it really had anything to do with corporate liability. It really seems like more of a concession to give to the public because it seemed to make some people feel better to wear a mask rather than anything they ever planned to investigate further or really intend to ever study in order to determine a clear level of effectiveness.

People voluntarily jumped on the idea that masks might be helpful before anyone was telling them to wear them. When did Ohio start requiring masks?

They were required for one day before the governor changed his mind. April 27th.

Yes, and how often does the public get concessions? We have had to fight tooth and nail to stop companies from poisoning us with their products, but all of a sudden they are on board with the mask mandate? That's not funny at all? Not a bit ironic in the slightest? I find it very strange that the people who underfund safety and sanitation are having some true change of heart.

It's true a lot of people were wearing masks in Ohio before the mandate. That mandate which started May 2nd I believe, also only requires workers to wear them. It's not very strict, and your right, it's a small inconvenience. All I'm trying to say is that the numbers were going to spike and go down regardless of what we did.

More importantly, if we have stopped the bleeding so to speak than we should rejoice. And start easing up on the restrictions. Like if the mask works fine, I'll wear the mask. That fact shouldn't lead to more restrictions though.

Sorry to hear that. It creeps me out to see so many people wearing a mask when I walk in, so I don’t look at too many of them. I’m waiting to see if someone comes up to me and says anything about how I‘m not wearing one...no one has so far.

hmm, in general, I agree about the getting concessions thing. Accommodating the public in this way when there isn't any real evidence of a great deal of concern for public health does create some confusion.

Although, when it comes to what you are seeing with the numbers in your area, if there is not a significant percentage of mask-wearing compliance, there isn't a real way to know whether they are effective or not. So the conclusions remain as an unknown rather than leading to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter what you do.

I would imagine that it would take an area 3 weeks of at least 70% mask compliance to see whether or not they changed the way the numbers appear to be trending. I would say most areas seem to be around 30% to 70% compliant right now and so this should be somewhat useful in speculating whether this makes a difference.

However, this is not the same thing as determining how far something travels by air or other more specific measurements that would swing a final decision in one direction or the other. So it is frustrating. Restrictions shouldn't be guesswork at this point.
