They have promised $2000/month for 16 weeks to anyone who has lost their job due to Covid19. The problem is that they have closed all the social service offices in Canada, the website has crashed, and they’re not answering the phone.
I was already on benefits when this hit. I went on medical benefits back in September, but they only last 15 weeks — not usually enough time to recover from anything serious. I am lucky because I responded very well to treatment, and was able to get a note from my doctor clearing me to work, which means I could apply for regular employment insurance when my medical benefits ran out. I applied back at the beginning of the year to have my claim converted from medical to regular, and it took them until two weeks ago to respond to me. I kept going to the local office and asking what was happening with my claim (because whenever I called, their system would just hang up on me because their call volume was too high), and they would put a note in my file and promise that someone would call me within five days. Like I said, it was 10 WEEKS before they got back to me, and this was before Covid19 hit us. My wife needs to apply for the emergency benefits, but I’m not going to hold my breath that we’re going to see any money for a long time.
Even so, $2000/month barely covers housing for us. My EI plus my wife’s eventual benefits will bring us $4000/month, but when half that goes to the landlord, it leaves us less than $100 a day for food, utilities, etc. Canada is expensive.
We are doing OK financially at the moment because we have generous relatives, and because I sold all my work equipment (I used to have a commercial power washing business), and my truck. The socialist safety net that Canada offers didn’t save my business, and it won’t cover our living expenses for very long.
