Not that I am debating the future possibility of martial law resulting from the present coronavirus situation, but I have been finding that after years of spending time considering these possibilities, in the face of this present situation, more is being ruled out as as a possibility than being affirmed. However, I think for a lot of people, this experience might be a gateway to speculation on these things rather than an exit. But for myself, at this moment in time, I just don't see anything about most of the shelter in place orders that are being implemented across the country that suggest the possibility of martial law.

Lately, I have been reading about what the constitution has to say about epidemics, and I find it strangely comforting to know that many of these measures are not new ideas. They weren't something thought of within the last fifty years by an evil genius.

Even in considering the possibility of forced vaccinations, what would be the point of this outside of basic economic control? It is basically like a constitutional loophole rather than a way of replacing the constitution, which almost makes it all seem stupid. If you have to make a loophole, it means that you can't really challenge a majority that would dispute removing the constitution in place of a different system of government that centralized control in a more obvious way.

There are several articles about the constitution and the history of epidemics considering this is not the first one that has ever presented itself in the history of America. This is one that I found described the history in a fairly clear way if anyone is interested.

When the Constitution was drafted, epidemics of infectious diseases, especially smallpox and yellow fever, wreaked periodic devastation on the American states.4 In response to these diseases, as well as the more common endemic infections, cities and states undertook a variety of legal measures. They instituted quarantines, 5 provided medical care for the poor,6 and periodically ordered the cleaning of filthy urban centers.7 Although these actions were often ineffective due to poor or even erroneous understanding of the diseases being combatted,t these state actions were, in the words of Blackstone, "of the highest importance." 9 States and cities sought to fulfill what was then viewed as one of government's essential obligations under the social contract: 10 to protect the "Peace, Safety, and publick good of the people . . . . " After all, during an era where an epidemic could easily shut down an entire city, as yellow fever did to the United States capital, Philadelphia, in 1793,12 protection from epidemics was essential to the maintenance of public order and the attainment of all other public goods.

Martial law launched in Cali. Buckle your seatbelts!

I'm sorry but this guy is talking absolute nonsense that should not be taken seriously at all. There is so much wrong with this video, it's just not even funny. This is what California will look like with a shelter in place order.

Compare this with the video from China where the people have been locked in their houses for so long, they are yelling that it is all fake because no one has let them out and they have no real way of knowing what is going on outside.

It will be a much different experience for people in California. He even references Benjamin Franklin even though epidemic measures were covered in the constitution. It says it is not clickbait, but that is all it is. Just utter nonsense video.

What can I do? What’s open?
In California, for example, essential services remain open such as:

  • Gas stations
  • Pharmacies
  • Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants
  • Banks
  • Laundromats/laundry services
Essential state and local government functions also remain open, including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.

What’s closed?
  • Dine-in restaurants
  • Bars and nightclubs
  • Entertainment venues
  • Gyms and fitness studios
  • Public events and gatherings
  • Convention Centers

People in California are already covered with benefits too and don't need to wait for the federal government to do anything.

This video is grossly exaggerating an order that is an essential part of stopping the spread of the virus throughout the country. California is a gateway for international travel into the US. Personally, as an American, I'm glad there is a shelter in place order in California restricting travel to other states right now and there is still a lot of money in California. There is enough money in that state to make even a six-month shelter in place order one of the most leisurely shelter in place experiences in the history of the world without any help from the federal government.

If there is going to be martial law, it is going to be because of people like this guy getting irrational people to start acting irrationally and start some kind of riot or another form of "protest". People should try to count their blessings and not go out looking for trouble where there is none or there will find the trouble they are looking for.

This is an interesting take. I shan't address the specific reasons for looming martial law-- evil demon as it were.

As a Californian, I agree with all of this. I'm still ordering food delivery, people are still driving around, many of us do have health benefits (thank goodness for MediCal), and we absolutely go to places like Vegas for fun, which is in turn visited by so many other people. Both LA and Vegas being shut down is the best thing right now. It's so boring, but if there's any chance of stopping the spread in the U.S. even further it's by limiting the tourists to those locations.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if this triggers the next LA Riots. With so many people stir crazy at home, all it takes is one viral video of a looting or police brutality to go around and inspire others.

I hear you.
The Wuhan residents decry the situation as fake. The bit where the media narrative is confirmed is nowhere in the video. The videos in the links below are pretty simple and straightforward:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-china-socialmedia/with-cries-of-its-fake-wuhan-citizens-voice-discontent-idUSKBN20T215
Point taken on the epidemic find.

The order does not stop the "virus" by creating a "shelter-in-place". The shelter-in-place "orders" are unnecessary. The US could have followed the South Korean model:

The South Korean model is the one that works the best according to a few sources.

There's not enough active military to put the whole country under martial law. They probably couldn't even lockdown Texas, at least not effectively. Plus troops need to be paid and fed. How is the government going to do that if everything is shut down?

Logistically and financially it would be impossible to sustain. If you are that worried about martial law you need to look up a concept called attrition. Basically the longer any military campaign goes on for, the weaker it eventually becomes.

I live in California: there is no "Martial Law." We were simply advised to shelter-in-place and avoid going out for non-essential reasons. But I still went out earlier, and the only real change that I noticed were long lines outside the supermarket and a slight decrease in traffic; the latter was a godsend.

I'm glad to hear that... relieved, really.

These lockdowns are nowhere near martial law...Was in the middle of scrolling down to make sure I didn't repeat it lol

I agree with the points Corbett is raising. The response to this virus doesn't match the danger it poses. The threat of the virus will pass but what will remain are the legal structures and precedent that would allow any authoritarian leader the power to enact martial law, medical martial law, lock-downs, quarantines, forced vaccinations, etc.

The scariest part of this scenario is how willing cowardly citizens are to give our corrupt, lying officials (that includes the medical establishment) unwavering trust. We sit glued to our devices waiting for the next corporate/state orders. I'm not saying there isn't need for concern- our elderly are obviously at great risk. But man the lack of questioning, the completely spineless acceptance of this overblown response is frustrating.

Disagree. Everyone was caught off guard by the lockdown, but I wouldn't say it's scary.

Nobody was waiting to see what would happen or what the direction was, we either saw it trending on Twitter at night or received the text in the morning.

As far as "spineless acceptance", we're not going to go out and protest in the street over a temporary closure, mostly because many businesses were already seeing a huge drop in sales leading up to the shutdown.

Hell, I even went to Disneyland right before they closed and it was the most empty I had ever seen it. The max waiting time was 10 minutes for anything.
For Disneyland to have a drop in visitors, especially when we get the Residence Pass and people go as a last minute thought, you know things were slowing down significantly; long before it was required to close.

Apart from grocery stores, hardly anyone was out and about shopping. Personally, my place of work had been a ghost town for weeks until it was given the O.K. to close, as well as so many other people I know.

It'd be stupid to protest the shut down of unessential businesses like bars, clubs, etc. when the majority of us were already dreading going into work because the clientele was already staying home. No one cares if you can't go buy an overpriced drink in a dirty club.

We can still buy food, gas, go to hospitals, order takeout, and exist in public.

We don't protest when most places of businesses are closed for national holidays, we're not going to protest because irrelevant places are closed for a pandemic.

Meanwhile in Pennsylvania my local police department just announced they will NOT be responding to any calls they do not deem an emergency. Which they are defining narrowly. Down to skeleton crew - from an already skeleton crew:

Not sure why they would announce this on Facebook tbh.
