This is a genuine question that just came to me that I'm curious about. It seems that the majority a Christians, with just a few Muslims. I do recall seeing a Hindu here at one point. So for this thread the audience is more from Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Zoroastrians, Sikhs, Jains, pagans and any other religious groups here.
If you're from one of the lesser-vocal religious groups here it'd be great to hear from you (or even PM if you'd prefer).

If this thread happens to get some replies, perhaps a small introduction and what religion you practice would suffice. The purpose here is friendly discussion from the lesser-majority here. :)

(obviously, no proselytism or debates on this thread...in case it wasn't clear)

Wait, you can't start a thread on religion/spirituality that doesn't propose an argument or debate!!! :D

I regularly use the search bar looking at old topics; there's been a wide range of religions represented over the past 2 1/2 years. It's helpful to hear from different perspectives. Recently @Chara has posted about Shinto which many people in the West know little about. I listened to one of their prayers and it was wonderful.

I agree, all traditions should be welcome.

I definitely agree, it's much needed in places like this.

Yes Shinto is incredibly interesting. I've read several of their sacred texts over the years, including their famous "Kojiki" and seen some of their ceremonies. It is a religion that has quite a unique spiritual vibrancy. Besides that Shinto does indeed have quite an interesting history. Thanks for posting :)

So I kind of oscillate between "Hinduism" (a Western name for it) and Buddhism. Probably one day I'll finally settle down enough to practice either one or the other permanently, not entirely sure if I'm there yet though.

Lately I've been chanting Hare Krishna Maha Mantra which is basically from a monotheist tradition, but today did some Buddhist meditation as well. Just watched a video of the Dalai Lama visiting a Hare Krishna temple where he says that Buddhism and Hinduism are like a twin brother and sister (not sure which is the brother and which the sister). He also points out that in India different religions lived in harmony for a very long time... If only our Abrahamic brothers and sisters could learn to do the same!

Hinduism is the 3rd largest religion, constituting 15% of the the world's population.

"Unlike other religions in the World, the Hindu religion does not claim any one Prophet, it does not worship any one God, it does not believe in any one philosophic concept, it does not follow any one act of religious rites or performances; in fact, it does not satisfy the traditional features of a religion or creed. It is a way of life and nothing more."- Indian Supreme Court

Technically that's "it doesn't worship any one Godform", although it takes the logical approach that one's beliefs don't make reality.

There is a lot to admire and love about in Hinduism, it's a wise religion. I wish there were more Hindus around here :)

In the postmodern west, we just have “truth” as the Existential “leap of faith” (that many privately know is built on sand). Thus in a world of “my truth” and “your truth” at least have the compassion and empathy not to doggedly insist that there is anything out there called “THE Truth”?

Are the many paths, many ways and many truths of Hinduism really just Existentialism in a sari?

There is only One Truth in Hinduism (God), that's the point of Hinduism. Form is not substance, image is not substance. I wish you where willing to explore Hinduism rather than take whatever random hearsay you've heard some random person say about it. I've already asked you about your experience with the subject and you've expressed both a disinterest and openly uninformed position, so I am not sure why you continue to post something such as this without choosing to actually explore the subject yourself.
What you're trying to paint is not Hinduism.

This thread is not for you (notice it's for non-Abrahamics), so please respect the OP. However you may like to contribute to this thread, since you're concerned about it: https://vigilantcitizenforums.com/threads/what-and-why-we-believe.6430/

I had a Hindu friend at uni. She didn’t believe in Ganesh or Hanuman yet had pictures of them all round her room. They represented man reaching out through his imagination to the divine (or beyond) in a way that really does seem to mirror the western existential preference.

I will leave your thread in peace...

Catholic here. It seems that some people don't consider us as real christians
Yes, that’s true. Catholicism isn’t Christianity, your traditions prove it to be true...they don’t match up with what the Bible says, so that why I say catholicism isn’t Christianity.

edit: I only tell you this in truth and not in arrogance or meanness.

The proper kind of rite is not magically but psychologically efficacious. That is why a well-conducted Mass produces a powerful effect, particularly when the meaning of the ceremony can be followed. But once lost, lost forever! That is the tragedy of Protestantism. ~Carl Jung, Letters Vol. II, Pages 208-210.
Even so, as a Protestant, it is quite clear to me that, in its healing effects, no creed is as closely akin to psychoanalysis as Catholicism. The symbols of the Catholic liturgy offer the unconscious such a wealth of possibilities for expression that they act as an incomparable diet for the psyche. ~Carl Jung

I think that it’s hard to live by faith not sight because what people really want is that tangible evidence that God is real. However what a catholic thinks is tangible is really false...they are deceived.

I know you're not mean, it's hard to see inflection in text the same way we are used to like in voice.

As for the main subject, it isn't the topic of the thread so i'll refrain from extending it but, hey, if you're interested in a friendly discussion without proselitism send in a message
