Chemo is a rough decision to make for anyone but especially a kid. My husband said it was rough to go to the cancer hospital and see the kids there taking chemo..no doubt about that.
I think the problem is is that’s the only treatment there is...maybe the authorities don’t want to see a dead four year old while the parents try other methods that may or may not work?

you think the authorities care?
big pharma cares... they want their cut from the sick and dying.
I'm tending to agree with you polymoog,,I know its radical..BUT.....so many people getting cancer treatment..so many kids..now that we have forced heathcare.."insurance"..it seems weird to me..IDK..am I thinking crazy

Ya I do think some authorities care..I can’t think that finding a dead four year old is good for anyone.

When I went to look up the case referred to in the OP, I found that this isn't a one-off. Cases like this are popping up all over the country, since 2004 at least. The parents in this particular instance weren't completely against the chemo, they just wanted to explore alternative treatment options. The problem arose when the hosptal staff insisted , and got Child Protective Services (CPS) involved to force the treatment on the boy and his family.

It looks like it may be time for a national discussion of the issue. Where to draw the line between parents' rights to decide and other interested parties, such as the medical community and govt. agencies? It won't be easy, and it won't be pretty, but we as a society will have to come up with some ground rules at the very least.

it seems pretty clear cut to me.
parents are the legal guardians of their children. parents decide, not the state. id like to see a clause in there to give children the right at a specific age to make some of their own health decisions if they wish to override their parents, but the state should never ever be allowed to make the final call.
if this goes to court in the future and they rule otherwise, the state becomes the primary decision maker de jure for our children and by extension, all of us. that is unbelievably dangerous.
