Nothing has done more for universal human rights than western civilization,
Right they have tried and succeeded (recently after the 60s)for a while in the US , however, overseas it failed in targeted regions .countries for non American people.
Something broke after 9/11. Broken by the Patriot Act in the US and a blatant disregard of human rights overseas.
I understand Trump has surrounded himself with torturers and will never close that travesty of justice Guantanamo.
The loopholes and disregard in the justice system are rolling back civil rights. Moreover, the disregard for war crimes is eroding global human rights.
Looks like that success story is going awry.
Let us see what the future brings shall we?

Nothing has done more for universal human rights than western civilization, but there are no perfect countries. As long as there are humans calling the shots, there will be abuses.

Thankfully, individual protections built into the constitutions of western countries protect citizens from the excesses of would-be tyrants, and the freedom within those countries allows citizens who disagree with their own government to loudly say how they feel.

Our freedom of speech is the most important right we have. Out of it flows every other right. The importance in a free and just society of being able to speak your mind cannot be overstated.

That's why China sucks.
Freedom of speech ---> freedom to think ---> freedom to question ---> freedom to experiment ---> freedom to invent--> progress.
The fact that China has to steal ideas and break copyright laws shows the long term effect of programming. No imagination.

since maos rule, theyve been a rush to catch up to the west at ANY cost. theyve destroyed a great deal of their natural surroundings and environment at the expense of "progress". amazing that its the same people who, only 150 years ago, were very much in touch with mother nature.
